CA AB 174, as introduced, Bonta. Weapons: grandfather clauses.
Existing law prohibits the possession of various weapons. Under existing law, certain of these bans exempted from their scope weapons that were possessed prior to the ban, if prescribed conditions met, are authorized.
This bill would declare the intent of the Legislature to subsequently amend this bill to include provisions that would end all of those exemptions.
Digest KeyVote: MAJORITY Appropriation: NO Fiscal Committee: NO Local Program: NO

Bill Text
The people of the State of California do enact as follows:
SECTION 1. Under current law, certain banned weapons are permitted under various “grandfathering in” clauses. It is the intent of the Legislature to subsequently amend this measure to include provisions that would end all of those exemptions.

It was a comment about how some of the right wing folk on here have started accusing the left wing folk of "exploiting" people to further an agenda.
If we post a story (like Newtown), we are accused of exploiting children (this was said in another thread)
But if they post a story about a gun being used for the RIGHT reasons, they aren't exploiting anything or anyone. See the abortion thread for more hypocrisy.
Well it depends on HOW the story is posted and commented on. Unfortunately, children are often used in a stereotypical logical fallacy in order to appeal to one's emotional side rather than one's logic. We never want to write policy on emotion. This was satirized on the simpsons quite well to pass illogical laws:
On the "pro-gun" stories I'm not really seeing an appeal to emotion but rather examples of people using guns legally to protect themselves. This story might have been used to exploit the woman if posters were focusing on her age etc. but as I've seen thus far each story is a different demographic.
I've often heard politicians make statements such as "if this law just saves one child's life its worth it". Thats an illogical statement that plays on people's emotions. If we apply that idea to all laws, we might as well stay in our beds.

I feel this 86 year old woman is being exploited in the name of your pro-gun agenda. Please stop.
Wait what? How is using her experience to further the cause of gun ownership exploiting her? I support her right to own a firearm. I'm not exploiting her, I am supporting her and her civil rights.

AFter a bit of research brakeman are still on short distance freight trains. Long distance UP and BNSF trains just have two men.
-
For freight trains, they still handle manual switching and making/breaking the trains. It is a physically demanding job. For passenger trains, they take tickets, and make sure all the doors are properly closed.
Are you sure? These days when a train is broken down in a yard they don't even use an engineer, its all handled by remote control I kid you not! Supposedly its more efficient.
-
Yeah, that's happened a lot. We should focus the entire national security infrastructure on that issue.
I'm pretty sure the job of a brakemen has either changed or does not exist anymore. Many years ago the breakman would have to initiate the brakes on each car. Now its all centrally controlled.

Okay so we have determined that with a semi auto you have something like a .000001% chance of bringing down a plane. What about the railroad? Are they shooting at hazmat cars or something?

Let me get this right.
According to Bloomberg a women can destroy the live growing inside of her because.... "it's her body her choice".
But this same women can;t decide how much Mr. Pib to guzzle.... or what type oc container to carry it in.
I told you people before about the left drunk with power.... and you ain't seen nothing yet trust me.
Well I would say the container is a waste of petrol and harmful to the planet. Planet above people!

I thought the drink rule was bonkers...but this is logical.

If there are say 350 murders with rifles...and lets say 200 of them are semi auto, how many does Colorado have per year? 3 or 4?

If it wasn't a rhetorical question, then the gun nuts in the audience failed to actually respond to the question posed. The question was why anybody needs these weapons and high capacity magazines. The response were blurbs from the second amendment. Nobody needs this stuff because of the second amendment. One could argue that because of the current interpretation of the second amendment nobody has to have a reason why one would need this hardware but that was not the response offered. The gun nuts just chose to ignore the request to remain silent and add insult to the injury already suffered byt this father.
You say this because you disagree with their answer...thats why there is no point in arguing anymore....
-
It's funny how the silent majority in the audience knew how to properly react to the rhetorical question posed by the grieving father. They remained silent as instructed. Because they know the meaning of respect and dignity. Unlike those that felt it appropriate to use the occasion stand up for that which killed this man's only son.
I would argue that it was not a rhetorical question.....but whatever. Your set in your ways, we are set in ours. Its a waste of time to argue over it.

Incredible this would happen in the same state that just passed the law to arbitrarily limit magazine size to 7 bullets. That is just amazing! Who woulda thunk that the SAME people that want to strip the 2nd amendment would want to strip the 4th amendment????
I'm shocked. I had no idea there was gambling in Casa Blanca!
New York is getting pretty totalitarian what with their maximum drink sizes.

Your thread title is incorrect. The "stop and frisk" law was upheld by the supreme court. It's doesn't violate the 4th.
I think you're refering to a "Terry stop" in that if an officer has reasonable suspicion a person has committed a crime, he may ask for the persons name and also frisk for his own personal security. Patriot, I believe is refering to the New York law which has been partially struck down in January in which the police were stopping people coming out of their homes etc. without reasonable suspicion.

You need a geography lesson. California's water almost exclusively comes from within the state.
I thought So Cal imports a percentage of its water?
-
If you can shell out $500.00 for that gun, I'd venture to say that you can spare $20.00 for the registration.
20USD is not a barrier. Of course if it was NY, I wouldn't trust them.
-
Registration in and of itself does not infringe IMO as long as the fees do not become a barrier to ownership.
That being said, the State of New York has shown that registration does lead to loss of property in that registered firearms under the previous law now must either removed from the state or handed over to the state (without fair compensation I should add).

If you accept that US gang culture is extremely virulent and the other civilized countries do not have the same gang culture that explains quite a bit.
I'm reminded of all the times I heard the UK media talk about how US gang culture has started to seep in to the UK and how its affecting crime there.
