I believe it's up to 3 months to get the physical greencard.  SSN should take several weeks at most.

@Katientsm Did your husband show them them the endorsed IR1/CR1 visa in his passport?  That should be the verification they need that he is a legal permanent resident.

Yeah he showed the physical visa in the passport but apparently you have to be in the system and if not USCIS/DHS has to provide verification via SAVE. No idea why the passport alone isn't sufficient, when you already have permanent residence

  2. Hello, I was wondering if anyone has had the same issue:

My husband (IR1 Visa) applied for a social security card in person a few days after arriving in the U.S. It has now been 4 weeks and nothing.

The office had said that he needed verification with DHS because he wasnt in the system yet but that it shouldnt take more than 2 weeks.

According to the SAVE website, the status is still under review and when I contacted USCIS, all they said is that they can make us an appointment to go into a field office, but it can take weeks just to get an appointment.

My husband needs to get a State ID ASAP, and we need the social security card for that.

  3. We completed our IR1 interview on Tuesday and the embassy approved our case but said they were still waiting for the medical results to be uploaded into the system. (The doctor had given us an envelope because they said they couldnt get a hold of the embassy?)

A couple days ago, the doctor sent an email that the embassy had given them the wrong code initially so now they need a signed consent form and another photo in order to send our results electonically.

Im assuming its pretty fast to send it electronically to the embassy? The medical exam was over 2 weeks ago so they have all the results.

We are planning to move in 1 month so I hope it doesnt take another week for the results to upload.

  4. It depends on the country, so you should check with your local administrative unit. Here in Slovenia, I needed an apostilled birth certificate from my state before I could get married here and an apostilled fbi background check for my residence permit (if you want to stay more than 90 days). If you need those, it is definetely eaiser to get them while in the states. You can visit the U.S together in the meantime with ESTA, but be prepared to show proof that you will return back to EU, e.g. return tickets, employment contract.

How do you ask Emma for this?

This is what Ema provides back:
Please select the "Check Case Status" link below to check your case status online. On the page that opens, enter your receipt number or case number and press the "Check Status" button.

*This link will take you to a new USCIS.gov site.

    More Information:

What I go to check case status it does not provide a processing location. My processing location I know from my previously received mail and document showing where my case is being processed. Is there another way to do this?

You can only access an agent during business hours, from 7 AM EST M-F. If you keep typing in "speak to an agent" and "technical problems" you should be able to connect to one.

August 28 submission - RFE on November 16

November 16 submission - RFE on February 18

All documents now show as 'accepted', but they are saying there is insufficient evidence of income. I work outside of the US, so therefore all of my income is foreign and doesn't count (despite me making well over the poverty line and having suitable assets to appease the 5X requirement). Joint sponsor is retired but also has considerable assets.

First RFE, NVC only asked for 1099 from joint sponsor - which I promptly uploaded a missing 1099 from bank interest. Now they are requesting proof of my income, proof of joint sponsor's income, and another joint sponsor. Frustrated and demoralized from the entire process... hard to plan your life around a moving target like this. I anticipate the answer already... but... any suggestions other than wait?

Wow, Im sorry, that sucks.. 😕 Im also living abroad and my joint sponsor is retired, so I am not looking forward to hearing from NVC..Is your joint sponsors income close to the minimum requirement? I dont see why they would be asking for so much more evidence. You could always try to expedite, doesnt hurt to ask..

I wouldn't put too much weight on these status changes tbh. PD Feb 9th, Actively reviewing April 9th, and no updates since. (Texas Service Center)

Not trying to be negative, just have learned to take things day by day and not get too optimistic.

It obviously seems to vary a lot and this isn't the case for everyone but I have followed many other cases that are in a similar boat to mine where we all got excited over the 'actively reviewing' status change but then no news for another 8+ months.

Yeah my sister is waiting for an I-130 at Texas service center, with active review status since February! It seems when you get active review status they either immediately approve it (like in my situation) or you wait months.

Is ID authenticator app on the IRS website? We managed to get our transcripts via mail but being able to create an online account when you live abroad would be extremely handy.

I was able to get my transcripts online using a VPN to create an account and verify my identity with the ID.me. I had verify with a live agent because I don't have a U.S. phone number though and it took forever because they kept rejecting my documents and i had to try different ones.

  9. Update: I was able to open an online checking account with Capital one with the help of a family member in the states. You need to have a U.S. address and phone number to open and maintain an account but you dont need to go in person to a branch. I tried State Department Federal Credit Union but they wanted me to show a mortage or utility bill to verify my foreign address which I dont have because I live in my inlaws house.

  10. I (USC) am living with my husband in Slovenia while we wait for the spousal visa process/green card. I want to improve my credit score before we move so I recently opened a new credit card, but Im not sure how I will pay it from abroad.

I have transferwise, but from what Ive read, its not a good option for paying a credit card bill and I know that using my EU bank card would be very expensive.

Has anyone had success opening a U.S. checking account online from abroad?

Related to this, is there any way for my husband to start building credit before he gets a green card/SS number?

    Thanks!
