that's a great question.  When i was born my father said... the girl gets a first name and a last name.  (his name of course)  lol  He said more than that would be confusing.

I have never wanted to change my name (it's a personal decision and not what this post is about)  I respect any woman that does.

However, if i had to, I would take the paternal.  In my father's words... "too many names are confusing"   I think that in every country, the paternal is the one "that counts"  I hope that helps.

I really had a hard time getting to the point of changing my name. Before I was thinking the same lol (I still haven't changed it yet).

But thats what I was thinking, the paternal name has a ring.

    Thanks for the input!

    One year, that's great!

We did biometrics today, took 26 minutes...hahaha. fast and painless (no waiting).  Now will wait for the notice for the interview, I guess?

Then we went straight to DMV for Ana to take the Driving Permit Test on computer...she finally said she was ready.

But, she failed after 12 questions. It was hard she said - very different from the online testing quizes...said they showed photos of intersections and asked questions and some other obscure questions.

Anyway - she has some experience now on what to expect and I swear they make the first attempt test harder than the follow-ups.

I told her no problem, we will go back tomorrow and try again.  We will go back every day until the 8th of September or until she passes - I figure she can make 6 more attempts...hahaha

    stay tuned.....

    good luck to, John!

    rs

HA. I think John is will be the same. He's been practicing on line, but we'll see. lol.

But no worries, Ana will have a license and her green card before Christmas.. NC is going full speed ahead with interviews!

I need to vent about something completely unrelated but am sure some people on here deal with.  My husband comes from a country where both paternal and maternal surnames are used.  So when my husband got here and applied for SSN they said they had to use the name on his Spanish passport (paternal/maternal combo).  I said fine.  Now i am dealing with an error on his health insurance card.  They believe his paternal last name was his middle name and decided to initial it.  It was an easy fix with them but i know that i will seriously have to deal with this for a long time.

Again completely unrelated.  Just needed to vent!

We know that struggle well. We constantly have to reiterate that his full name has to be used! So we make sure his middle name is on all of his documents as well as both last names. But I've got a unique situation that I'd like to get your opinion on.

So John's father's name was paternal/maternal. John took his fathers combo and does not have his mother's name at all. SO when I change my name what would be my last name? John is so casual and just tells me to pick on LOL :D I personally like the ring of the paternal last name but should I just take the full combo?

Lol forgive my naiveté but he's no help lol

    hmmm....interesting.

Maybe the states are different in their licensing.

Ana's North Carolina ID expiration is same date as I-94.

DMV dude says we come back in when we get new paperwork for USCIS with new dates???? I'm assuming temp. green card?

She never had a driver's license in Brasil...

We will try to go in for Driver's Permit test in September.

I'll bring what we have and the AOS NOA1 notices...see what they tell us.

    I'm curious....rs

Might be a state thing. John’s ID came in the mail yesterday and it’s good for a year.

Hoping to take the drivers test next month too. He didn’t have a license in Brazil either so we’ve been practicing lol. He’s a natural to my surprise 😆

    any word on your biometrics?

Same experience in DMV. I’m not gonna be able to get an ID and a drivers license until I get my SSN from my EAD.

    hows yours?

After 8 hours at the DMV they finally approved for his ID. We have his SSN so that kind of helped too.

@Ana Maria mentioned that they got their's with an expiration date same as the I-94. However, John's I-94 is expired. So I have no idea what it will look like. They said we should receive in the mail in 7-10 days. Haven't gotten it yet, so we'll see.

I did freak out for a minute cause someone else mentioned that.  But my agency is 60 days so luckily we have time.  Thanks!

Good! Ours was 30, of which I found out on day 32 lol. A day late and a dollor short seems to be my trend on information these days lol.

So now my new hobby is stocking up on first aid kits, and covering our home in Lysol lol. Germ free environment until open enrollment :D

  7. Just finished up our biometrics. We did our walk in a week early. No questions asked. It was so easy and quick I felt like we were missing something.

Same experience as the others. Came in, filled out a form, took picture and fingerprints, answered a customer service survey. In and out in 25 minutes.

    The next wait continues.

We’re at the DMV now trying to get an ID card. Fingers crossed as our 1-94 is expired. Didn’t find out that it had to be within 30 days of expiring until last week. But no harm in trying. Wish us luck. None of the clerks look like they’re in the mood to do any favors. Lol

Hello! I'm in Maryland (DC area)

Hey there! Glad to see someone local. Seems we are few and far between on VJ. Lol. Even though the Potomac office seems to stay bogged down lol.

We got our biometrics letter Friday. It’s not for another 2 weeks so I’m hoping to do a walk in next week. How was your experience? Did you go to the Alexandria office?

Thanks and congratulations on the marriage. 😍

  9. Hey everyone,

So I’ve got a few questions, if anyone can help I’d appreciate it!

    1. How do we apply for an expedited EAD? We’ve already submitted our application and habe our NOA1, but my husband just got a job offer. What are our options?

    2. What’s an infopass?

    3. How do we know what office is processing our case? All 3 of our NOA1s say the national office. Aren’t they supposed to transfer our cases to a local office near us? If so, how do we know which one?

    4. I saw someone mention an SLC office. What’s that?

Sorry for all the questions lately but this process is a lot for convoluted than the K1 and I just want to make sure I’m not missing out on any information. I stalk the USCIS website but it’s hard when you don’t necessarily know exactly what you’re lookin for.

    Thanks!
