I think thats all most americans are asking for . No one is asking anyone to loose there cultural identity but it should be American first. Practice whatever you do at home and speak your language but be interested in the american culture and traditions . That includes the language obviously . 
 
I have found doing that in a very short amount of time americans have welcomed me with open arms and been happy to show and invite me to for example my first baseball game explaining every rule patiently and inviting me and my wife to dozens of BBQs, birthday parties etc ... Having also spent a brief time in Australia living and working I can tell you It was impossible to break the ice with the locals it is very insular atmosphere . Here everyone has been nothing but helpful and forthcoming. 

I have  not been here anything like that long but have tried to make myself familiar with Americanisms, I am sure there are still a few that I do not know but they will be outliers.

Agree we need to cut her some slack.

Never said anything about newly arrived refugee families and what not . Its fine if it takea you 6 months a year or lets give it two . I know it can be easily done in 3-6 months just basics to get around in life . With full time job and not much money . You need wifi or internet access and a book or two . But if you see a persistent behaviour of refusing to learn or outright laziness , just like what i was refering to then thi is what I disdain . My english is not perfect but it lets me work, make a good living and participate in society and visa journey . Thats not a high bar to reach for anyone and should really be the minimum you can expect from newly arrived immigrants .

Also what you do in your bedroom doesent matter to me but if you dont speak english or live in your bubble yes I have disdain for you . Yes its there fault , no americans dont make fun of people that dont speak the language or speak it poorly I KNOW from experience . They do hate it however if you dont even try . 
 
Dont give me this “we need to increase english language courses give them this give them that” Basically make them get used to the hand out mentality . Everything served to you on a silver plater . You go get a English for dummies book study and watch youtube and netflix with subtitles thats how I learned Italian and English.
Then you go out and speak and not stay in your enclaves where its nice and comfy . 
 
English is extremely easy to learn in general so there is no excuse . Go move to Mexico and see how you can live there 20 years no English . There government forms , social security office , passport applications etc are not written in English and Suhaeli and god knows what .

Yeah I transferred from Los Angeles to a Army base in NC. So it's nice to be living in the South again, and in the field I want to be in.

Luckily I just transferred over to IT Support and Compliance form Telecommunications. So that means I sit at a desk all day like today and wait for a guy to respond to MY REPEATED REQUESTS FOR MORE INFORMATION FROM HIM to help understand and fix his problem.

Tax season , I do accounting . Its tough right now happy I got a little bit of time to enjoy this amazing discussion lol . Cant believe I spent my whole break reading and talking on here . Later guys

When I first got custody of my two older children when I lived in CA they had to go to 2 different schools due to their age for the first year. My daughter went to a good elementary school that is very diverse of all races and I loved it. While my son went to pretty bad elementary school that was not diverse at all, the make up of the school was like 50-60% Latino, 30-35%Black, and maybe just maybe 5% White if that. The school had so many Latino students that their parents could not speak English at all that doing meetings or performance when the administration spoke they would speak one paragraph in English and reiterate in Spanish for the Spanish speakers. While at my daughter's school that was more diverse and better performing the language was all in English. Don't even get me started on Parent involvement in the school because there was none at my son's school, while my daughter's school almost every parent was involved in some way or another. That school was great to say the least and they miss it, but they sure don't miss CA class sizes.
 
A lot of Americans just assume that you are picking up English from your environment and you shouldn't need help after xxx amount of time. Even my wife who can speak English fairly well has issues with some words and phrases(I had to teach her the English word for slug last night), but she can speak it enough to get her point across fairly well. We both think that people need to have a firmer grasp of English before they come here to immigrate, at least be able to speak in basic English to get a point across. I don't care if you have a accent or not just be able to get a point across.
