no need to be sarcastic, I can't tell you how many Americans I've met who assume that foreigners can just move here äs long as they go through legal channels", forgetting there are very few of those channels.

For the diversity lottery, go here https://www.dvlottery.state.gov/ You'll be able to sign up for the 2019 lottery sometime in October 2017 (there's a limited time window). I have no idea if Portugal is eligible but you can find out.

And as said, it's a lottery. I tried a few times, and never got in. In the end though, I won a different kind of lottery, namely the heart of a US citizen :)

You could also try working for an international company with offices in the US. This would still be a temporary stay, but in some cases, it is possible to later get a green card (not exactly sure how that process works or what the criteria are)

Dutchies seem to be able to do that with no problem!

    On topic --

It seems your only option is to have your business transfer you but as all these wise people have mentioned,it's only temporary.

I don't wanna be that guy but you have very very slim chances of coming to the states. You can't use the lotto from the UK.

  2. We don't really need me to be a citizen over to her country because,we as USC's don't need a visa to visit the Netherlands up to 90 days every 120. Plus i only have so many weeks of vacation time ;P

So the money and effort spent would not be worth it.

  3. Do note expediting mean's its more on you to make sure you bring all the proper paperwork to the interview. The NVC then no longer verify or review the paperwork they just send it to the embassy. They basically take a quick peek "Everything seems to be here"

If expedited bring all copies you ever sent to the NVC to the interview and more if you need too.

I wish you guys all the best of luck though! I wish more of you could've been accepting your visa's when my wife got hers since we filed at the same time.

  4. I'm rooting for you guys here! I will help as much as possible.

One tip for you is if you get a rude NVC rep on the phone, just hang up and call again.

Always expect to wait they are packed around prime-time with phone calls. I know you are anxious but they go through a-lot of people, look at it through there view.

Don't yell or say anything rude to get them annoyed.

Be patient, hang up on the rep and call again.

  5. As stated by some wise people above me.

Send the photos, send passport stamps, airline receipts and send any hotel and receipts you have from your visit.

Prove you were there for a good amount of time with your partner.

They are looking for solid proof you were there with your partner. You might have to visit and take some pictures as well. -- Try sending the three pictures and any more evidence basically is the gameplan.

The intent is to have a ceremony that her family and my family can go to, so getting married in the US is our goal (I have more family/friends that will go than she does.) The CR-1 is what I think is the goal.

I guess calling to verify what would be necessary is a good idea first. I am trying to translate the Japanese Embassy/Consulate websites to see what filing her documents for reciprocity is going to take.

I bet the marriage certificate is necessary for my filings in Japan as well.

Everything seems good. Once you get the marriage certificate you can start your CR-1 process. I can't give you info on what she will need to change her name but i do wish that goes well and simple for you.

In the mean time,do collect any evidence you can come across. (Pictures with her and her family, wedding photos, plane tickets, hotel tickets, financial mingling etc etc) You can't be too prepared! Best luck.

    Edit for a tip--

If you want her to have her name as yours during the CR-1 process and her green card she needs to change her passport name too.

I have lots of pictures, just not the wedding ones.  There's nothing I can do about getting those back.  My question is should I send an explanation during NVC or has anyone had this issue and how did you deal with it? Thank you!

You can try sending an explanation but they don't really take your word for anything. You really need to dig for some wedding pictures from friends and family. Not having wedding photos i think will come back and bite you in the butt.

  8. You can only send what you have right? Any pictures you have is good. Send more then 3 BUT! Make them at different places if possible. Don't use 5 photo's all from the same place that won't help.

    Use anything you have.

    Edit --

Wait why are they requesting you have not met the person? You have the marriage certificate from wherever it happened right? You sent that correct? That is more then enough with some pictures? Did you apply for a CR-1?

In California she just needs her passport to get a marriage license. If you apply for one online you can walk into the county clerk's office and pick it up the same day. If you don't apply online you might have to wait in line at the office for quite some time (a couple of hours in LA).

You get to choose between confidential and public license. After you get married you might have to wait for a few weeks to get your marriage certificate depending on what county you get married in. We had to wait a month for ours.

Really? When we were looking at our options of marrying my wife here, they wanted more then a passport >< Thank you Illinois!

  10. Why don't you just marry her in japan and then apply for the CR-1 from there? Does she have a tourist visa already or are you going to have to get her that to come into the states?

-- Either way let me try to help you here.

You need to call up wherever you shall get married and see what they need. They usually need an affidavit of single status and a birth certificate. Both which need to be notarized and or apostatized.(Spell check that word for me fellas). Probably translated as well. You can just call the court and see what they want.

This won't cause an issue because of the marriage certificate being here in the US. Do NOT apply for a green card while she was there if you were not on an approved K1-Visa as you will get denied right away,so it would be better to let her go home and then do a CR-1

  11. This does not add up in my mind?

    1. You need to make it clear that you are NOT a UK citizen otherwise you won't get very far.

    2. Don't they need a copy of your passport at the start stage?

    3. Which country do you live in now? Are you living in the UK or Nigeria because this makes a big difference.

In my eyes this seems kinda fishy. You needed a birth certificate to get a passport? Nigeria allowed you to get a passport with a UK birth certificate?
