The AOS gets processed at MSC first (in Missouri) and will either get transferred to your local office (in which case you will most likely get an interview) or to the CA office if you don't need an interview. You won't know until much later in the process though. In either case you will get called in to the local office to get your biometrics done.

What USCIS wants is your marriage certificate, not your marriage license. The marriage certificate is what shows that you got married.

Is there a way of finding out what field office is processing your I-485 for K-1 relative? Should I have received a forwarding notice or am I to assume it is the local field office in my city?
    Thanks

Yes. My wife had to go in three times. Once for the I-765 and twice for the I-485. The first time the fingerprints did not come out well so she had to go in again to re-do them. It is annoying but you have to go do it again if they ask you to.

Once your case gets transferred to the NVC, you will get a notice telling you that they got your file and that they will send to the US embassy in your country. The embassy will then notify you and let you know what documents you will need to gather. You will also need to get a physical exam performed by a civil surgeon. You will also need to fill out your DS-160 and then schedule your interview at the embassy.

This will all happen once the US embassy gets your file in several weeks. For now all you can do is pretty much wait.

Congrats on your marriage and for starting the AOS process!

While AOS processing varies depending on the field office, expect the entire process (filing to receipt of green card) to take up to a year. We filed our I-485 June 2016 and my wife just got her green card on June 3, 2017. Hopefully you guys also filed for EAD and AP. The review for those take about 90 days.

Certainly not everything, but somebody should have a plan for immigration more than just to be together and marry. That's still the start of the journey, not the end.
I don't think the implication was that you should start over. While this is your thread, others will inevitably read it. Making the best visa decision for one's circumstances is a critical part of the process to avoid certain unnecessary hardships.

Because sometimes people only focus on being together as soon as possible, and don't take heed to what happens afterwards, such as the filing fee required, being unable to work/travel abroad for several months, etc. Sometimes the extra few months apart are the best in the long run (cheaper, grants the ability to work and travel immediately, etc.).

    Totally agree.

And you're the us citizen, right?
it doesn't have any effect on you cause you're living your life in your own country, you don't have to worry about being out of status, not working, depending and relying entirely on someone else, etc. but oh well, this is out of topic and certainly not my problem

The "small fortune" should've been taken into consideration when choosing the k1 and the amount should've already been set aside for when the foreign partner got here.
It is for the best interest of the now foreign spouse to apply for aos as soon as possible, they certainly don't want to live in limbo and not being able to get a license, work, etc

I wouldn't worry. As people have been pointing out, different states have different laws and maybe in your state the filed marriage license is what serves at the official marriage certificate, in which case USCIS will be okay with it.  I'm just speaking from my AOS experience in California.

Good luck with the AOS process!

Because employers get these requests all the time they often issue standard letters that state that the employee is employed full time as a ______ and annual salary. Your husband probably just needs to request one from HR and he can probably get one pretty quickly.

You might get it sooner than a year. It really depends on the workload at your local field office where they process your application.
You can check average AOS processing times here: http://www.visajourney.com/timeline/aosstats.php

If you already filed originals with your application, then they will already have your complete file at the interview so you will not need to bring another original copy. If you have another original copy, you might want to bring it as back up just in case, but most likely it will not be necessary. My wife and I had our I-485 interview a couple weeks ago but the IO did not even ask for our birth certificates.
