Yes, ok - I'm bored, but can you blame me??

I guess flames and I are more bored than you are! We are scanning ketchup bottles! I guess it tastes saltier as ours appears to have a higher sugar content.

CDN: Tomato Paste (made from fresh ripe tomatoes)

U.S.: Tomato Concentrate (made from red ripe tomatoes)

CDN:Liquid Sugar

U.S.: Distilled Vinegar

CDN:White Vinegar

U.S.: High Fructose Corn Syrup

Yes, I thought I was losing my mind. When I was a kid and we traveling across into Bangor I swore the Hersey Chocolcate bars tasted better. Is it just me but does Coke taste different in the US ??? And why is the .99 cent McDonalds menu still $ 1.39 in Canada ???

I am not sure about Canadian ketchup since I have not been there since I was 12. But when I went to the Philippines the Snickers were different. Smaller, less peanuts, tasted different. I think they monkeyed with the peanut to caramel and nougat ratio.

Should never mess with the Snickers!!

Interestingly the U.S. version of Coke has more sodium and less sugar than the Canadian version.

Wonder if that isn't true of so many things we find different here. Not only the HFCS, but the ratio of sugar and salt? Would be interesting to check out. And I'm not always convinced it's sugar so much as the different types of sugar. Think it was mentioned here that Canadian catsup is sweeter? I find the American brands sweeter. Wonder if it's the type of sugar though?

Yes I think you are on to something. Maybe the high fructose corn syrup is sweeter than the liquid sugar. So that is why the vinegar and sugar orders are reversed on the labels. It takes more liquid sugar to equal the same sweetness level as the corn syrup, but it changes the taste ever so slightly.

I'm also disappointed in the Kraft Caramels here in the US. I found some in the grocery store a few weeks ago and got excited. They were getting to be hard to find back in Canada.

They didn't taste the same at all and they also didn't have the few chocolate ones in there that you always got in Canada.

When we come back from Canada our car is usually loaded with HP Sauce, Cadbury, Kraft Mac n Cheese, etc. for us and other expat Canadians in DC.

But what's really funny is that when we go to Canada our car is loaded with what his mum can't get in Montreal, namely Oven Fry, Burgandy, and Golden Mushroom soup. Guess we have our own little trade route!

HFCS is about 10 times sweeter than cane sugar, which is why food manufacturers started using it. They can use less of it, so it costs less for them. However, they don't usually pass on that savings to the consumer, and what they fail to mention is that HFCS can alter your brain chemistry and your pancreas, so that when you drink HFCS drinks, you don't know when you're gettig full, so you just keep eating.

There are some who say the ever expanding waist bands of Americans is directly related to the rampant use of HFCS.

If Canada ever starts using it in food stuffs sold in Canada, I'll be moving to Europe :P

It wouldn't surprise me if it was the cause. There is something amiss in the food chain and it irks me that the media mostly portrays this as a - naughty naughty North Americans eating too much - problem. They always show the woman who drives through at Burger King and orders 6 whopper meals, as if she is buying for the family but they are really all for her - whatever!

I'm not saying that some people don't eat too much, some do and some always will (and I don't care), it is just annoying that manufacturers and the government aren't willing to actually attempt to fix the real problem.

And in a recent Canadian study, Burger King turns out the most trans-fats than any other fast food restau. I imagine its not any different in the US, however I think Hardee's serving sizes are probably twice as big

In Canada, they're telling food manufacturers to cut out as much trans-fats and unhealthy ingredients as possible. In some European countries trans-fats are outright outlawed. In the US, they just keep adding more and more ####### and the FDA says there's nothing wrong with it :P Burger King Canada says they'll be eliminating trans-fats by the end of 2008. I wonder what Burger King US is doing?

btw...Tim Horton's donuts turned up second to last on the list of trans-fatty donuts. Dunkin was first with the most. So, one could say that Timmy's donuts are almost healthy! ;)

I am American, engaged to a Canadian-and have obviously spent a lot of time in both places. Canadian ketchup and American are NOT the same-Canadian is WAY WAY WAY a thousand times better! I NEVER ordered fries or anything in America, but in Canada I want them all the time now-because the ketchup is great!

Good thing I'm gonna be living in the STATES!!!

I've thought of hoarding it...hiding it in the car so I can stock up...hmmmm...

Did you guys realize... the one sold in the US is a product of Canada :)

ugh, I hate heinz Ketchup down here.... it tastes way more vingerary or something.... I usually just stick to Hunts...

whenever I go to Canada I make sure and bring a tin of the real stuff back home with me.... I then portion it into separate bottles and freeze it.... I still have one bottle left from my last tin.... I don't want to use it because I don't know when I will get more... although my parents might be coming for a visit next month so maybe I can get them to bring me a tin...

I can't wait to go to Canada in January, I'm gonna have to check this out. I haven't noticed too many differences. Some things are better and some are definitely not. Tim Horton's hot chocolate is by far the best hot chocolate I've ever had. It's sweet and fluffy mmmmmmmm. Starbucks coffee drinks are better tho if you want real coffee. Tim's doesn't even taste like coffee

3/5/11 sent LOC paperwork

3/9/11 date of NOA

?/?/?? biometrics appointment
