Rethinking citizenship

The processing times that I am sitting through are making me seriously consider moving to Canada to be with my fiancee. Our country makes legal immigration a fight while illegal immigration is no problem at all.

Seriously, if not for Louisiana's fishing, I think I'd be Canadian right now.

All you need is a modest house in a modest neighborhood

In a modest town where honest people dwell

nope, not rethinking it... we both plan on being dual citizens to make future travel and any moving from one country to another easier. The process is tedious, but that's the sacrifice I guess we all have to make. As far as the illegal immigration angle, I don't find that has any bearing on our decision. Does it frost me that some people get here without going through the right channels...yep, but I guess I can only be worried about what we do. At least I know we won't ever have to look over our shoulder and wonder if someday the law will catch up with us.

quite a misconception going on there!

Yes, I think we will wind up back in Canada, we had made the decision to move back to CT to be with my elderly parents, but really, I think Canada will be the final destination.

It really doesn't even have to do with the cost. The UK isn't cheap either. But you make the choice based on whatever is right for you at the time. Did I want to be separated from my husband for 1 1/2 years? No, but people have it much worse and in the end it's worth the wait. I'd do the wait again if it meant being where we are at this point in time; I still wouldn't be happy about 18 months of separation, but that's just how it is. And again, the illegal aspect of this question does not come into the equation at all.

My husband and I have been very lucky, granted. But honestly the process hasn't been that horrible.

Totally worth it for us.

I'm not quite sure why people get jealous of illegal immigration. Sure it might be a fast way to get together, but look at all the bad stuff that comes with it. You will likely be stuck in very low wage or day labor jobs. Get into any tangle with the law, your fault or not, and you are sent home. You can never really take advantage of much of the benefits of living in the US. Most of the people who immigrate here illegally do so without a legal option. No matter how long it takes, the legal option is much better.

It is not required for a L.P.R. to become a US citizen.

My grandmother lived in the USA over 54 years and never became a US citizen. She met all the requirements, but never felt the need. My grandfather naturalized though.

But then again...they never really had the desire to move back to their birthplace because it became the USSR after they left.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995

Very doubtful.

Please note that there was sarcasm within the initial statement.
