I don't want to start another thread, so I'm asking for a little info on this one...

My husband and I just visited the local SSA and I was able to apply for a SSN, but ONLY with my maiden name. We presented them with the passport + K-1-visa + I-94 + birth certificate (all with my maiden name) and our marriage certificate (in order to apply with my married name).

The clerk said she couldn't enter my married name, until after I get my GC, because my married name isn't validated or something for INS. Isn't marriage cert enough?? I need the SSN, so I agreed to use my maiden name, but I am married and want to be known by my husband's name.

Can I use my married name anywhere now? I have to open an account, I have to be added to my husband's insurance and what not. We filed the AOS under my married name, but since the basic information = SSN is under my maiden name, will it make things more difficult?

Ive read all through the forum. I cant figure out how I legally change her last name now. Do I need to go to the county clerks office or ??

In Texas - you take the marriage certificate to the DPS (Driver's License Office) and get a new ID/DL, then also to the SS Office to get a new card and ta-da, legally changed. (Of course after you get new cards, you may need to change any business accounts as well - banks, employment, insurance, etc.) :thumbs:

(This differs from state to state am sure...)

Social Security, in Michigan, refused to accept a change in her given name (with the marriage certificate) but changed my wife's family name.

(That was fine, because being our third visit to a SSA office to try to get her SSN, we were happy just to get something out of them. One office told us that we had to give them her GC before they'd issue a SSN!)

To change from Maiden name to new married name do it at the Social Security office. To get a name change from your married name to a new name, better check on that one, not sure if it varies from state to state.

hi, i got married last dec 3 and according to our marriage cert, i am still using my last name and not my hubby's, the lady from the courthouse asked me if i want to change my last name, and i said yes, but when she asked for my ssn (which i dont have as of this moment) she didnt ammend our marriage cert and advised us to apply for ssn first, question is can i apply for ssn using my hubby's last name although my marriage cert says im still on my original surname? and later on go to the courthouse and have our mariage cert be changed?

regards;

jen
