I really want to get a dog. Growing up- we always had dogs- I need one.

Mel is open to the idea- he hasn't had a dog in many years.

Lately I have been thinking about Westies. They are beautiful!! Does anyone here have or ever had one? Anything you can share about them?

I don't have a Westie, but they sure are cute! I do however, have a Shih Tzu. She's a great dog, if a bit barky. The only thing I will say for dogs with longer hair is that it is a massive pain in the ####### to keep it looking well groomed! Oh yes, expensive too. You might want to keep that in mind when considering dog breeds. I wish I had!

if you can't pet the dog while you are standing up, it's too small a dog.

Westies are cute but they do, as a breed, tend to suffer from skin conditions though. Frequent vet visits will be in order throughout his/her life, probably.

I had a Westie named Prince...had him from the time he was little til 12.5 years later we had to put him down.

He was the bestest dog ever. Other than my cat Mimi (who was an adopted stray), he was my only pet. Losing him was one of the hardest things I've ever had to live thru. I know that sounds OTT, but it's the truth. I never wanted another pet after him.

Great temperment dog.

My grandmother, who used to breed champion showdog poodles...gave Prince an egg every morning when he was a puppy. I dunno how, but it somehow changed the composition of his fur....my cousin had Prince's bro who didn't get an egg, and his fur was like normal Westie fur. Prince, on the other hand, had soft fluffy fur like cotton balls.

I'll scan some piccies later....he was such a cutie pie (L)

RIP Princie...I miss you!

You're thinking of a horse (or Great Dane).

I personally can't stand little yippers, or one under 10 lbs. or one that you can fit in a pocket.

I want a Jack Russell - my mom has 2. (L) (L) Awww, doggies. HUbby is anti dogs but I'm DYING to get one.

I would probably get him/her clipped on the shorter side- the long hair isn't a priority. Plus with the heat here, it would be nicer for the dog.

I prefer a dog who doesn't shed much- back home we have a sheltie/poodle mix. I love her to death but the dog hair is everywhere.

Oh, another thing I should share....they're really smart dogs. Prince was v spoiled and anyone who came into my house gave him all kinds of attn. Then I started dating this boy who would give the obligatory pet and that's it.

Prince then developed this bad limp. He'd hold up his paw and whine and kinda crawl around on the floor howling. Naturally, we were so worried...so we brought him for all sorts of tests and whatnot. Nothing was found. Eventually, we went to an animal psychiatrist (maybe psychologist, I dunno) who advised us to keep a journal as to when Prince would howl and whine the most.

He only did it when my boyfriend was in the house

Then when I moved out, I left Prince at the house. He was really the family dog, and I was going into a condo, never at home, etc.... My grandmother (who lived with us and who was the closest to Prince) would tell me that he'd sleep by the door waiting for me to come home. She said 'he needs to see you live somewhere else...so I brought him to my place...he had a look around, and when he went home, he went right to sleep and stopped waiting up for me.

I could tell ya countless stories, but suffice it to say that my opin is they're a v smart breed.

That's how we clipped him...

Oh, and they don't shed at all.

I can't wait to see the pics!!

My Polly back home- the Sheltie/Poodle mix is 16. She was my 18th birthday present but her home is with my parents. The thought that I may never see her again breaks my heart- I can't even think about it without getting teary eyed.

Of course you'll see her again!!!

Losing a beloved pet is so hard....Prince was sitting on my lap when he was put down. I'm going to stop typing about it now cos I'm welling up even now all these years later.

My parents have one, found him as a stray....Mr. Duffy.

He's taken such a liking to my parents and vice versa, that I joke to them that they never loved me like that. :P

He's a really sweet dog, rarely barks, very attentive, wants more than anything to be part of the family.

He tends to scarf his food down really fast though and then barf it up, so they give him small amounts.

They also have to shampoo him regularly as his fur gets dirty often.
