It's also unfortunate that when illegal aliens are mentioned many Americans think of Mexicans first, but the fact is there are many other nationalities that have illegal aliens in the states as well. There just may be are more Mexican illegal aliens than any other nationality (at least that’s the perception truth).

reason why latinos feel threatened, cuz joe @sshole is 'dem mexicans are crossing the border' 'no more mexicans'. and all those attitudes, which proves that for some ignorants, it's a racial issue,

brb, i'm off hunting my deck of race cards again.

What exactly IS the truth, devlilette? You quoted pedroh's last statement, which includes his perception that people are saying "NO more Mexicans." Is that what you find to be the truth.

I'm DYING to know.

see where pedroh says calls some 'ignorants' racist? That part.

I take offense to the 'joe a@@hole' comment too, but hey, I can let it go.

Just curious, but why are you taking exception to something that couldn't apply to you?

Surely you have to be a raciest to be able to take exception to a comment directed at racists?

I admit I could be misunderstanding this, because it doesn't appear to make any sense as it stands.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

I take exception to the giant brush 'anti-anti-illegals' paint the 'anti-illegals' group with.

They can name call all they want & it's OK. We can't/don't.

By the by, I also surmise that many American were (and still are) offended that many Mexicans (Latinos) protested deporting illegal aliens. I don't know any other nation where you can simply bombard that country, break their laws, use up their resources, demand rights, and fight for amnesty without getting arrested and thrown out on your ####### no matter how much you contribute to the infrastructure of that nation's society. This whole "land of the free" thing is probably taken a tad out of context. :)

Maybe if we could actually start reading what people are posting and not make assumptions about what they think they are posting based on these broad and meaningless labels like pro or anti, or even anti anti illegal.

As I see it, you are taking exception to Pedroh calling you an ignorant ####### when he didn't actually make any reference to you or anyone on VJ. That just doesn't make any sense.

I was totally misunderstood yesterday because someone jumped to a conclusion that really wasn't based on anything I had said either. I have to say, it's rather annoying.

Irish join battle over illegal immigration

St. Patrick's Day vehicle for activists seeking reform

The Irish are standing up to be counted among the nation's illegal immigrants, hoping their civic appeal at St. Patrick's Day will soften the debate over immigration reform.

At St. Patrick's Day parades in San Francisco and Chicago last weekend, activists with the Irish Lobby for Immigration Reform wore white-and-green T-shirts saying "Legalize The Irish" and passed out fliers urging people to call their elected representatives in support of allowing undocumented workers to earn legal status as guest workers. Similar activism is expected at parades in other cities in coming days.

Adding heft to the immigrants' message, Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern, who visited San Jose on Tuesday, plans to push President Bush for legal status for illegal Irish immigrants when he visits the White House on Friday, St. Patrick's Day.

Although most of this country's 11 million to 12 million illegal immigrants are from Mexico and Central America, about 50,000 Irish people are among 3 million illegal immigrants from countries outside Latin America. Other countries contributing significantly to illegal immigration are Russia, Poland, Canada, Haiti, Korea, India, China and the Philippines.

"We've had some very surprised reactions when they hear it is an issue for the Irish," said Celine Kennelly, executive director for the Irish Immigration Pastoral Center in San Francisco, an advice and referral service sponsored by the Irish Catholic Conference of Bishops.

"They are in as dire straits as any other ethnic group," said Kennelly, who estimates there are 3,000 to 4,000 Irish illegal immigrants in San Francisco, most working in construction, in restaurants or as nannies and caretakers for the elderly. "They cannot get driver's licenses, it's harder to open bank accounts, they cannot travel home and return again. ... The relationship between Ireland and America is so long and fantastic, but it's in danger now."

More than 250,000 Irish immigrants reside in the United States, according to the census, and most of them are here legally. But in recent decades, most arrivals from Ireland have overstayed their visas and become illegal immigrants, said Kennelly, because the government is issuing fewer work visas. A 1991 program offered legal permanent residence to about 16,000 undocumented Irish, but there has been no legalization plan since then.

Wrong again. I take exception to most hysterical posts pedroh & other anti-anti-illegals name-calling posts. And sorry you don't like the label, but it's true. Maybe you prefer 'pro-illegal'? I figured that one was not exactly true...cuz mostly the AAI* group is just that, against us (AI*), not necessarily pro-illegal.

It seems most like to argue that the AI group is racist (see title).

Agreed. I've had the same experience on another thread.

I guess repatriating 50,000 Irish would be a bit of a challenge for Ireland, although less so now than 20 years ago. I am suprised there aren't more though , the urban myth is that there are more Irish living outside of Ireland than within.;)

Is it not possible for people to disagree with what others believe without being AGAINST each other? I'm not against anyone who is anti-illegal, I just REALLY don't agree with them. In fact, when I am around people who start in against the illegal immigrants, I just nip the convo in the bud and ask not to go there.

In the past couple of days, I've been called a fifth column and watch people high-five each other over pointing out that "we" all have spouses from a certain country. And most notably, someone just said (to paraphrase): ** those jacka$$es, in reference to "us" illegal-lovers. I'd be interested in seeing where I've called anyone a name who doesn't agree with me.

I certainly have thought about some choice names I'd like to call people, but I have refrained from doing so.
