I'm not sure if it's still the case, but I think the right of abode rules for Ireland used to be quite flexible, like if you could trace your ancestry back to an Ireland-born great grandparent and provide documentation, you could get an Irish passport.

By descent

A person is an Irish citizen by descent if at the time of his or her birth at least one of his or her parents was an Irish citizen. In cases where at least one parent was an Irish citizen born in Ireland or an Irish citizen resident abroad in the public service, citizenship is automatic and dates from birth. In all other cases citizenship is subject to registration in the Foreign Births Register. As of 1 January 1987 the Irish citizenship of those individuals requiring registration dates from registration and not from birth, as had been previously the case.

In practice, anyone with an Irish citizen grandparent born in Ireland, can easily claim Irish citizenship. His or her parent would have automatically been an Irish citizen and their own citizenship can be secured by registering themselves as in the Foreign Births Register. In contrast, those wishing to claim citizenship through an Irish citizen great-grandparent may be easily frustrated if their parents were not registered in the Foreign Births Register. Their parents can only transmit Irish citizenship to children born after they themselves were registered and not to any children born before registration.

Citizenship acquired through descent may be maintained indefinitely, with each generation ensuring its registration prior to the birth of the next.

I knew it was something murky like that! In any case, I knew I wasn't even close.

Thanks for looking into it.

Thank youy for the introduction to life. Much appreciated. I wonder how often you hold your tongue.

I don't remember exactly who made the jacka$$ comment...I could have sworn it was in this thread but when I went back to look, couldn't find it. It was in a thread about this topic though.

As far as dividing these discussions into 'pro and anti' illegal immigrant camps, which I think is pretty ridiculous - For my part I have said pretty explicitly on a number of occasions that I don't support illegal immigration or the negative impact it has on this country. I have also said words to the effect that I understand the motivations of economic migrants - which is a different argument entirely. Where I think we differ is on solutions. If it wasn't clear before - I hope it is now. Just wanted to make that absolutely clear and on the record.

As for racism - I do think it exists in relation to discussions about illegal immigration, to a small degree on here (though certainly not endemic or specific to any individuals) and to a greater degree outside of VJ. I don't think we're doing ourselves a disservice to admit that it exists, which is a far cry from 'accusing' people of it. That said it is important to point it out, when it happens, to not tangle up the real, legitimate arguments in gutter talk' (or indeed - false allegations) and certainly not to let anger lead us to associate ourselves with, or take ownership of questionable ideas.

Is this unfair?

Mexicans and all people of latino ethnic origin are WHITE. There are only a few so called races on this planet - Caucasoid (white), Negroid (black), Mongoloid (asian), Aboriginee (blacks from Australia). In regards to race, if they are not WHITE what are they? Their ancestors are spaniards, which are WHITE no matter how brown their skin may be. Hispanic or Latino is an ethnicity, not a race. It's not that some people are stupid about this, they're just ignorant of the facts.

Is it not possible for people to disagree with what others believe without being AGAINST each other? I'm not against anyone who is anti-illegal, I just REALLY don't agree with them. In fact, when I am around people who start in against the illegal immigrants, I just nip the convo in the bud and ask not to go there.

In the past couple of days, I've been called a fifth column and watch people high-five each other over pointing out that "we" all have spouses from a certain country. And most notably, someone just said (to paraphrase): ** those jacka$$es, in reference to "us" illegal-lovers. I'd be interested in seeing where I've called anyone a name who doesn't agree with me.

I certainly have thought about some choice names I'd like to call people, but I have refrained from doing so.

:star: Welcome to life, where you must hold your tongue sometimes.

As far as the jacka$$ comment, I dunno what you are talking about. There's plenty of r-word comments flying about the AI group.

You openly admit you are friends with illegals & will not report them. *shrugs*

charles asked me the same question.. answer, because I'm not a snitch... besides, I couldn't live thinking I destroyed a family, those guys I know have been living here for 10+ years, and their kids are born here, they have nothing back in Mexico.. I'm not a heartless 'law abiding' citizen as many others.. and if y'all want to report them, I can give you their info.. but I'm not a snitch.. they don't sell crack or anything else that bothers me, they pay taxes, and work like hell.. their kids are not mexican, they are Americans... so, I don't see the point of sending them back to Mexico

heartless and law abiding are not inclusive pedroh. now if you'll kindly post their information i'll call for you.

Good Lord, those classifications sound like something out of the Eugenics Handbook.

Hispanics are a fairly easily identifiable group none the less, and it is this ability to lump them all together based on visual cues that makes them as a group vulnerable to misidentification as 'illegal immigrants' regardless of their actual legal status.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Indeed. By that rationale - where would the indigenous South Americans fit into that mix? Or the NZ Maoris, Eskimos, Even the Native North Americans - granted most people are mongrels of one kind or another and now that we're not constrained so much by geography there's a lot more ethnic diversity these days, but there's no such thing as a "pure" race, and that argument is fraught with problems anyway.

They entered illegally. They are not ALLOWED to be here, yet they are. Make them pay a fine for every year they stayed or send them back.

Heartless has nothing to do with it. It's called the law. And they didn't follow it nor respect the very place they call home.

ha.. nice try.. but nope, I'm not a rat.. I prefer them to stay knowing that people like you don't get sleep because 'they are here illegaly'.. illegal immigration is not part of my daily life, I have better things to do, than being nosy on people.. there's not even a satisfaction in doing it, if they were harming the community, I'd do it, but, they don't bother anybody,
