Am i right in thinking the form to apply for work authorisation is only neccessary up until you get your green card, and after that the green card means you can work? It seems a little pointless filling in the emplyment authorisation document when the AOS could be out the way in a few months. I won't be working until i get my green card, so i do not need to do the employment form right?

topharry123,

You are correct - the EAD is only necessary up to and until you get the GC (GC is valid for living and working in the US). The crux is however that getting a GC can take a matter of several months to years whereas the EAD typically takes around 90 days (more or less). Whether you need it or not is kind of mute since (beginning August 2007) you're paying for it anyway.

Correct! Green-Card is work authorization and also allows return from trips abroad.

Green cards can take a few months to a few YEARS to get approved depending on name-check, so it is not pointless to apply for EAD with AOS, besides EAD is FREE when applied for with AOS. The EAD is useful for other things like applying for a driver's license, most states require evidence of legal presence before issuing a license, EAD satisfies this requirement.

I can't imagine not applying for EAD now that it's included in the AOS fees. I would also apply for AP for the same reason.

Agreed. Apply for the EAD its only a 1 pages application, its included in your AOS fees, also you AOS may take a very long time to process (Years! There is not processing time limit on AOS) but an EAD has a 90day processing limit. You won't regret it.

We got AP approved in 30 days, AOS was approved in 57 days. Of course we didn't know it would happen so fast or I would not have applied for the AP!
