Thank God Anh's parents told her that they will help to pay for the overages. As I should have expected, once certain people are on the list, others have to be added, otherwise there will be a family fued. Poor Anh cannot even invite 99% of her friends now because there is no room. Only one of her friends will attend. The rest is "old family."

Even with the exceptionally good price Anh got per person it will not cost $1500. I didn't want to go ver $1k because I simply cannot afford to do it. So I will somehow stretch myself to $1200.

Life is always interesting.

I don't want to think about the cost, my daughter just told me she is getting married in August!

I feel you. Same thing happened to me as well. It was originally for 20 tables and then ballooned into 30 tables. :( Hopefully you can recover most of the money from the guest giving you the red envelope of money. I also heard that some people put fake money in the red envelopes. Didn't happen to me but it is possible. So be careful and good luck. Relax and have fun too.

Fake money? I sure as sh!t hope not.

I don't think people will give fake money. It's possible but rarely happens. I hope all of the guests will give you money in stead of gifts. Their money will help a lot.

can someone please explain the Dam Hoi? From what I am reading here is sounds just like a wedding with getting envelopes with money? Also can someone tell me the difference between the ceremony for the engagement and a wedding, as far as what happens at the parents home? What is the engagement ceremony called and what is the wedding ceremony called? Any insight to this would greatly be appreciated.

The Dam Hoi is exactly the same the wedding, just different is it's smaller but it seems lately it's big like a wedding too, and one different thing is you two are not wife and husband yet so can't sleep together after the Dam Hoi :( . Understand what I mean?

Well after all we did have the Dam Hoi!!!!

Matt you are in for a very exciting time coming up. I know that your brain is fried the same way as mine is with all this worry, but enjoy your time in VN and Anh.

I am only going to show 3 pictures, one of her father speaking to me, one of me speaking to her parents, and one of a man speaking on behalf of my family. We had pictures taken at a studio with her wearing the Aoi Dai dress showing her ring, so we will also show these.

Dam Hoi: Family members only (maybe VERY close friends and neighbors) Formal Discussion between family elders from both parties to arrange details of future Dam Cuoi.

Dam Cuoi: The above people, plus co-workers, classmates, close friends and since you're a foreigner, they'll probably invite a few extra people for good measure.

Matt, don't forget to bring the credit card, you're along for the ride, enjoy it dude and keep us posted.

No way will I let them take advantage of me. But then again, so far it seems that is not the plan.

If possible, Take as much cash as you can and then convert the cash to Dong. This way you wont be tempted to use the credit card, and you can keep better control of spending but if you take your credit card for backup, you need to notify the credit card company at least 1 week in advance that you will be using the card in Vietnam, otherwise the first time you use it there, they will shut off your card.
