I lolled at the light switch comment, but it irritated me cos I just heard that same comment on tv, and now I can't remember what I was watchin! :(

That statement is not women specific, mind you...it could go for either sex. So it's not so much sexist as it is makin fun of ugly peeps....

I don't take offense in jokes like that. But people are different, if you feel offended there's always the option of skipping joke threads and reading only kitties threads.

Those who find belittling women funny, I truly feel sorry for your wives. Sexism is allowed here in OT every freaking week & I'm over it.

I could say the same about those who belittle men. Trust me, there are many, many women who do it and get away with it because it's considered being a "liberated woman" to put a man down. If a man says anything back, he's "sexist" and/or a "chauvinistic pig." Sexism is a two-way street, after all.

Honestly, I think the whole thing is dumb. Why do men and women feel the need to make fun of the opposite sex? Yes, there are differences (both physical and psychological), but I'm sure we can find a way to get over it.

About some of the feminists here... not all feminists are the extreme, bra-burning, hairy, man-hating, misanthropes that we naturally tend to think about when we hear the word "feminist." Like most groups, those individuals who fit this category are the loudest and most vocal, so the media concentrates on them and therefore, gives them the spotlight. Naturally, when this happens, the "average person" thinks, "Oh yeah, that's a feminist!" It's just a simple case of "the squeaky wheel getting the grease" as usual. Nothing new here.

Feminism doesn't mean women hate men or want to enslave men or anything silly like that. In fact, most of the so-called feminists I know really, really like men. Sometimes guys can irritate them, but that's in no way unique to feminists -- I'm sure men annoyed your Donna Reed housewife-type back in the 1950s too. The main difference is that with feminism, women can be more open about their objections today than they could 50 years ago or so.

The basic idea behind feminism is that women are equal to men. That's it. I think in most cases, I agree with this. There are some areas where I think men are better suited to the task and some areas where women are better suited to the task as well. But my reasons have more to do with biology than intelligence. If it were all about "how smart" anyone was, most women could do anything most men could do.

I think many men today are, in fact, "classic feminists" without even realizing it. Ask a man if he thinks his wife should get paid an equal amount to what the men in her office (or in her field) are making. If he says "yes" and his reasons include that if she's doing the same amount of work, she should be getting the same amount of pay, then he's just espoused a "classic feminist" theory. ;)

Is that even true anymore? That's not really the image of a "feminist" that I grew up with. I also don't tend to see such protrayals in the media. After all, it's not the sixties anymore.

Well, I have seen such images, but they aren't as prolific as some might claim. The main reason I used that description is because that's the "worst" type of "evil feminazi" I could think of in my head. I had to come up with something to portray as an relatively incorrect image of what a feminist is, after all.

I understand what you were getting at. I just have a hard time understanding why people still make that association. Most men that I know are feminists by the current definition, as you said.

There is at least one feminist group that opposes *bortion. Not only is it false advertising but its everything that feminism explicitly isn't (i.e. feminists for patriarchal social values).

Are you sure you're on VJ? The sexism here is a one way street...and feminism is pretty much the last word I think of here.

Its a specific group - they've been quoted a number of times in threads about *bortion.

Basically their stance translates to a more general belief in traditional, patriarchal values (woman stays in the home). Its no secret that traditional feminists (Andrea Dworkin is the only one I'm familiar with) were rather sceptical of someone who insists they stand up for women's rights yet basically accept the status quo of the 'traditional' gender roles.

I'm not an expert on it - but Dworkin wrote an essay on it which was quite convincing. To me anyway.
