I would say in answer to your cross analogy, that any Christian who sees the symbol of Christianity as more important, more sacred than the message, has indeed lost the plot and is behaving in an unchristian manner. The symbol of the cross is useful to remind a Christian of certain aspects of Christianity that are important, but to protect the cross, rather than the message would be ridiculous.

Well, I think the main difference is that a cow can provide a physiological purpose (i.e. food) whereas a flag cannot. I know you're supposed to eat a "sacred cow," but if I'm starving, that cow is dinner. ;)
