I think I want to start a lemon tree. Lemons always make me smile and brighten my day and I like to add it to water, tea and many foods  We just left Home Depot and the lemon trees were on sale. However, the instructions said that it needs to be planted in Spring. So is it too late to plant it? Can't I buy it and go ahead and plant it to get an early start on Spring :) ? Then again, it is so hot now and I do not think I will like caring for a tree in this current hot weather. What about a potted lemon tree? What if I try to grow lemons in a flower pot, would that work?

Well first of all u dint mention what kind of lemon tree u got ! and also i dont know where u live because i live in california and there's a different zone! for example best time for me to plant in Oct. so maybe u would to plant ur lemon tree in Spring, about if u can plant it in flower pot, i see there's no problem to plant it in flower pot, But!!!! if ur plant adwarf YES but other, still u can plant it if still a lil one. but make sure when it grow to transplant it somewhere. otherwise it will grow big and u will get a hard time to transplant it, or it will bend and u will not be able to carry it or to control it, and make sure to feed it organic fertilizer :D and spry it with organic sprayer it will not hurt the fruit even if there some still good to eat because Organic cant hurt u or the Trees, Or To Spray it with Oil Sprayer also will not hurt it too, go to the Nursery and get it from there.

Good Luck.

I know that now is a good time to plant trees in South Texas (I think you're in the Dallas area but that's only 1 zone north. ) Down here we don't normally get a freeze until well after Thanksgiving (maybe not until after New Year's lol) so trees planted now have time to get their roots established before the cold sets in. We have a little lemon tree that Mahmoud planted last year -- it's grown to 5 times the size and it's doing great -- it has dozens of fruit. I forget what kind it is but it has the big round lemons like they have in Palestine. It's very cool to just go out and pick one when you need one -- we even take them when they're still green.

The lemon tree will stand cold weather down into the 20s, but it doesn't like a sudden freeze -- it likes to gradually dip down to zero, over several weeks.

Do you have a sunny but sheltered area (like next to a sunny wall that faces south) ? It would probably do fine there. You may need to wrap it when you get a quick overnight freeze after a warm period.

Yes you can grow it in a pot, but dwarf varieties work best for this. You'll need to fertilize frequently to get fruit. Also it needs to be a pretty good sized pot, so it will weigh a ton -- put it on a wheeled platform if you plan to be moving it around.

Good lemony luck !

Plant it during Feast of Tabernacles ( Sukkot ).

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

A new tree, especially lemon, may not survive the winter depending on your climate. You can always keep it indoors in a large pot over the winter and care for it until you can take it out in Spring, and plant it.

I am in Illinois, Zone 5, and mine have done fine. I just bought a lemon, dried out the seeds and started them indoors in a large pot! LOL

I've got a lemon tree. It's an Improved Myer Dwarf Lemon tree and it's currently growing in a pot and doing quite well :) As long as the lemon tree you get is a dwarf, there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to have one! In the summer I keep it outside and in Spring/fall move it inside during the night. Winters I plan to put it near a window during the sunny days and keep a grow light on it for 6 hours when it's not sunny :) Hopefully it'll do well...I expect to get my first lemons next year :)

Yes, it really depends on your zone. Where are you located? If it's a dwarf type, then you are looking at growing it in a pot and you can do that any time. If you are located in a colder climate, I'm not sure why they would be selling lemon trees other than the dwarf kind you grow indoors anyway.
