And people say republicans are war mongers paranoid about security.

Spy chief: China, Russia spying on U.S.

WASHINGTON (AP) — China and Russia are spying on the United States nearly as much as they did during the Cold War, according to the top U.S. intelligence official.

Mike McConnell, the director of national intelligence, says in testimony prepared for a Tuesday congressional hearing that a law passed last month expanding the U.S. government's eavesdropping power is needed to protect not just against terrorists but also against more traditional potential adversaries, such as those two Cold War foes.

"China and Russia's foreign intelligence services are among the most aggressive in collecting against sensitive and protected U.S. systems, facilities and development projects, and their efforts are approaching Cold War levels," McConnell says in his testimony. "Foreign intelligence information concerning the plans, activities and intentions of foreign powers and their agents is critical to protect the nation and preserve our security."

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

And do you think that the US ISN'T spying on Russia and China - and a lot of other countries in addition to its own citizens - as well?

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

spying has been around for centuries and will continue for many more!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Totally agree. The issue is that many here have become complacent to what is really going on in the rest of the world. The Chinese government was also recently busted trying to hack into Australian, NZ and German federal government computers..

So many are now more concerned and preoccupied with bagging the US government, gay rights, stupid protests and what puff diddy is doing etc while governments overseas are doing everything they can to get an upper hand on the US. Since the US has been unchallenged as a super power in the past 20+ years, many have become complacent. Whereas countries like China, Russia, Iran, Venezuela etc are working 24/7 to get an upper hand on America and its technology. Only difference is that those nation do not have a NYT to publish their secrets..

PS I certainly know we are not spying on others because the NYT and other mediums here would have published it by now for everybody else to see.

Oops, another case of rational thought leaving the building.

Luckily, in the real world, most politicians and policy makers aren't swayed by this 'talk up a scare storm' rhetoric and get on with the daily grind.

Well – its natural that people focus on what goes on in their country of residence before what goes on overseas. Still I don’t think anyone really sees China or Russia as bastions of democracy. Far from...

As for not having a “New York Times” equivalent in those countries – it should perhaps be pointed out that ‘free press’ doesn’t really exist over there. Russia has closed newspapers and TV stations critical to its Govt, and in China not only is political dissent suppressed, but the state chooses what books and media its citizens have access to (up to blocking people from viewing certain websites in the privacy of their own home) which is as close to Orwellian thought control as its possible to get.

That we have a “New York Times” and a more or less autonomous media (though not without criticism of course – that’s a topic that can’t easily be discussed on a single forum posting) isn’t really a negative IMO. Rather the opposite.

This must be the scare storm rhetoric you are crapping on about:

CHINA has allegedly tried to hack into highly classified government computer networks in Australia and New Zealand as part of a broader international operation to glean military secrets from Western nations.

.....

"It's a serious problem, it's ongoing and it's real," one senior government source said.

Western intelligence experts say that China has also targeted the US, Canada, Germany and Japan as part of its global intelligence-gathering effort.

What are you talking about. Most of their technology is of western origin. The following are based on theft of military technology. Lets not even start on industrial espionage..
