A Sleeper Amnesty: Time to Wake Up from the DREAM Act

The problem with all these things is, whether you like the idea or not, illegal aliens are here in the US and can't just be ignored.

Clearly, some people would like to see them deported summarily. However, despite wanting this to happen, there is no way currently of footing the 'enormous' bill that such a measure would require.

We have on this message board heard all sorts of 'solutions' to this problem but they all require, without exception, a huge financial input.

In the meantime the problem persists and somehow the states who have the illegal aliens have to deal with them and in such a way as to be seen at least, to be treating them in a humanitarian fashion.

So, until and unless someone comes up with a foolproof and cheap plan of getting rid of them, they are here. Some of the measures that are put forward are a way to 'get the problem to go away' more cheaply than deportation and allowing the under 16's to become LPR's is way of going about it.

So, you can continue to berate the woes of illegal immigration, you can continue to bang the unfair drum, you can continue to get frustrated and annoyed that these people are 'getting away with it' at the expense of those who are trying to do it the 'legal' way...or you can accept that this is what is and get on with your life.

I think most people aren't so blind as to think that we could just snap our fingers and suddenly be rid of the illegal alien problem. However, the part I think most here take issue with is that we're attempting to get our loved ones here legally. Yet, we have to go through hell and back to do it! It takes loads of time (I'm sure we can all agree that being apart for months on end is extremely difficult) and costs a lot of money, as well as requires tons of paperwork filled out (and even an interview or two).

It isn't so much about people whining "It's not fair!" but asking why do those who break the rules intentionally get a "free pass" while those who follow the rules, hoping to do things legally, get screwed over by the very government which is allowing the illegals to do whatever they want in the first place? Each and every day, it's becoming less worth it to do the entire process the "legal way" since it's turning into nothing more than an unnecessary hassle and cost.

If things continue this way, I don't even see a reason why anyone should even bother persuing a visa in the next few years; they might as well just come across the border and demand to stay! After all, isn't it their "right" to remain in the United States? So far, the immigrants trespassing into this country think so -- and the worst thing about it is, apparently so does the majority of the U.S. government!

People here aren't very careful to distinguish between the private sector offering something that might benefit an illegal worker (Bank of America, being able to buy Cheetos without proof of citizenship, the laundromat daring to have a sign in Spanish, whatever), actions by local and state government (New Haven's ID cards, general community policing policies) and amnesty by the federal government. Blind seems like a fair charge to me.

As far as my husband's legal immigration goes, the process is surely a pain in the ###, but you know, I think it probably has more to do with marriage fraud than illegals. The people slowing me down aren't the migrant farmers. It's the guys who used to petition for fiances never having met them. It's the millions of people who delayed filing until July 28th even though they married months and months before. It's all the guys who brought over women who they barely know who then skipped town. It's the guys explaining that you can use the 90 days to get to know each other better and figure if their girl doesn't pass the interview, they'll just find another one. It's the women and men overseas who figure marrying a USC is a good way to get a permanent resident card. If we're talking why it's hard for me to bring over my Canadian fiance, there's your reasons. Not illegals.

I'm sure someone's done the math. How much would it cost to find, process, and deport 12 million illegal immigrants? I think it is not feasible because getting them out of here in a timely and legal manner would require something on the order of hiring a hundred times as many judges as we have now. (Right now, if you do deportation orders per day, it would take about 72 years.... which practically doesn't do a blessed thing.) That's before we even increase funding to ICE.

Well what about the $$ we are spending in Iraq, putting even 1/3 of that towards enforcement and using our national Guard, empower our local Police forces to be able to do their jobs instead of tying their hands. We are paying officer to enforce the law the govt. needs to allow local govt.s to help them, utilize our resources. Roundup deport, this ####### about arrest and release on promise to appear for trial is BS, these criminals are leeches , like roaches will scatter and hide in the shadows. Our govt. so worried about being "politically correct" that they are sacrificng our nations security, prosparity, and freedom to please Illegal Criminals terrorist nations.

The prob is you can now come to USA, whine and cry about rights, and when you wake up into the next morning, your dream will come true.

where as us americans, get crapped on bc when we wake up the freeloading illegals are taking and taking and we are still suffering.

is it easier to focus all the ####### on illegals instead of the homeless and abused and neglected children in our country???

i think they need the help more than the illegals

Yes exactly. What many fail to realize is that the most other nations have a strict immigration policy. Australia has one of the toughest immigration policies in the world yet 1 in 4 citizens was born overseas.

I suspect the Australian border is easier to patrol than the U.S. borders.

@ Gary's last post.

That may be true in the long term, however, in the short term you need to raise buckets of cash to do this which means raising taxes substantially NOW in order to get these laws enforced and reduce the problem significantly (which is really going to go down well with the 'you can't raise my taxes' voter, who is mostly the voter who is crapping it with the illegal situation)

Ignorant Hibiscus is goping to open their home to all of VJ and their families, just waiting for Ignoarnt Hibiscus to post his address here.

I may be wrong in saying this but Ignorant Hibiscus most likely does not pay taxes, does not have a mortgage or even pay rent & probably does not have any children and lives in a cave in Arkansas. What else would explain such ignorance and blindness. OR Ignorant Hibiscus is here illegally hmmm

Either that or Ignorant Hibiscus is a billionaire.

It will not happen over night. It took decades for them to get here and it will take a long time to get them out. But I want to start now. Enforce our borders to stop more of them from coming in and make it very hard for them to work here and the problem will go away without huge expenditures.

@ Gary.

As I understand it, the law enforcement that can happen is happening (in terms of what the resources currently available can afford to do) and currently there is not much change happening. Honestly, I believe that what are you saying makes a lot of sense. However, I still think that in terms of government acting out a strategy, doing this in such a way as to really make inroads is going to require more money than most would be prepared to pay in increased taxes. Border patrols aren't free either and the wall idea is just ridiculous.

As you may already know I am against new or raised taxes but this is one point that I would welcome an additional cost if it were done right. I feel that in the end our country will be better off if we solved this problem.

I apologise. I still have a hard time understanding those who advocate illegal criminals, especially those who twist the words of others.

majority of America USA voters are against Illegal immigration. Majority of the USA is against support of any kind for illegal aliens.

Majority of America supports enforcement!

@ Gary

I'll leave you to 'sell' the raised taxes to your fellow 'conservatives' ;)

Seriously, do you think enough voters would go for this? My thoughts are the most politicians are so scared of increasing taxes to pay for this that it doesn't even register as a viable alternative (I guess it's possible that studies have been conducted into this too, although I have never seen any evidence of it). It would be interesting to find out how much this would actually cost to be effective, and therefore how much tax would have to be levied.

As for the results in terms of higher prices for goods? Personally, I am quite happy for businesses to be made to pay real wages for people doing the jobs that are currently done by illegals. An interesting issue.

I agree it is not an overnight fix, by cutting them off from public assistance (non-emergency medical care, housing, ect..) and prosecuting companies who hire illegals with regular audits or surprise checks of those suspected of employee illegals.Make it hard for them to work and live here illegally. or give them a path to citizenship once they LEAVE & Apply legally Behind those who are in line applying legally, make them pay back taxes and fines & then by all means give them legal means of entering the country if they violate their visas then 10 year ban. Enforcement now will solve the problem in the future!

Even enforcing it at a personal level making it Illegal to hire an Illegal alien in any capacity. Allowing police to do their job, allowing the public to report suspected illegal pressence and then allowing local police to act in cooperation with ICE to act on those tips.

Our Govt. knows where most of them are and can enforce the laws better than they are doing.

Companies who hire these Illegals should be made to pay huge fines & back taxes, and losa of permits or liscense until they can prove they are operating legally.

In addition to that enforcing our borders not punishing our border patrol for doing their job. once illegals are arrested Not releasing them for future court date but hold immediate deportation hearings and remove them from the country.

Yes it will take time & lots of $ but USA's Future will thrive and once enforcemtn starts they won't flood our borders so easily, majority will be forced to leave willingly.

That would almost certainly not happen. I have yet to hear a politician of any side of the political debate advocate this.

There are logistical problems as well as financial ones, and again, while it all seems easy in theory, it just isn't in practice.

No, that doesn't mean don't do anything, it means you can't just say, 'cut off all their supplies and they'll somehow disappear' There are millions of people to re locate in a way that is ethical, no easy fix.
