My wife just received a letter from National Records Services. The letter says...

Important Facts About Your Social Security Card

If you are changing your name or need to replace a lost social security card, it is import that the paperwork be completed without delay so that a new social security card can be issued. Recording your name change will help update the SSA and IRS for filing income tax purposes.....

National Records will complete the necessary paperwork for a new social secuirty card to be issued in your name. If you write "husband" on the information card, we will provide their paperwork to have both issued at the same time. Our service fee is $15.00.........

National Records Services is a private document preparation service and is not connected with the SSA. This services is to update your records with both the SSA and the IRS....

Letter states that they are not connected with SSA. Is this some kind of junk snail mail?? Or is this needed to be able to change my wifes last name??

Throw it in the trash. They expect you to pay them money so they can take care of the paperwork for you. Or maybe they just want to rip you off.

You can change your name with SSA for free, and it's very easy to do.

Oh man.

I'd take this to the post office and ask to see the postmaster.

This sounds like scam mail trying to fraudulently obtain Social Security numbers from people. Abuse of the US Postal system for criminal activity is a felony.

I definitely WOULD NOT throw this in the trash. I'd give it personally to my postmaster.

<_< Hmmm...Surprise, surprise. I just received one of these as well. Seems pretty suspicious to me. I'm going to follow the advice of rebeccajo and take this to my postmaster. It seems as though they could get your SS#, full name, address, signature, spouses info, AND money. Gotta be illegal. I'll let you all know what the Post Office says.

My husband and are truck drivers and are away from home for weeks at a time. Because of this we have our mail sent to my in-laws home for safe keeping. My Father in-law called yesterday to tell me that there was a letter for me marked "Personal and

Confidential". Of course I was concerned and worried about it all night until he brought the letter to me this morning. I immediately opened it and glanced over it quickly in a panic. I saw the words IRS, unless taxpayer's name matches their tax returned the word denied again, Then I saw the line that said send $15.00. I then calmly set down and read the letter word for word and was very concerned that this was a scam. So I looked it up on my computer and that where I came across this site. I am furious! With all the concern about "ID Theft" how could these people be allowed to do this. I wonder how many couples have filled out the card with all their information and sent them the $15.00. People need to be made aware of this. I am not only going to show it to my Postmaster, I am also filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and I am going to call the Local TV stations and see what their community "Watch Dogs" can find out.

I don't think it's anything illegal or a scam. Your postmaster will tell you the same thing. They are not trying to trick anybody into sending them personal/confidential information. It clearly states that they are a document preparation service. Obviously, if they fill out and file your forms, they should be compensated for services rendered.

I wouldn't use them since I like to do my own leg work, but for people who don't have the time or don't like filling out forms, this is a useful service.
