Really worried - I'm approved, but we've moved!

Ok - so the story goes. We filed through DORA on January 5th. A week ago, we moved apartments. I naturally redirected the mail to go to our new apartment.

Today, I had my EAD appointment, which with DORA you get 70 days after you have filed. I was told I couldn't have an EAD, because I was approved. (YAY!) On the advice of the (mis)information line, I handed the officer a letter asking them to update my address on their records. I also have an IR-11 or whatever the form is coming to me in the mail to change my address legally with the USCIS.

I phoned the (mis)information line and asked them to change our address a few days ago. They told me that their system was down, but they would update it by the end of the day.

Today I called after I found out I was approved, and they still have the old address showing. They said they still couldn't change it because of the problems with the system. They had no record of the person I spoke to previously making any attempt to update the address, and they refused to take the details down to do so.

What I'm worried about is the fact that I have obviously only recently been approved, and they may send it to the old address. The guy at the window today told me that the green card would NOT be forwarded like the rest of our mail, and would be returned to the USCIS as undelivered. The post office has confirmed the same thing just now, and they can't do anything to intercept it.

I'm petrified that my green card is going to go missing and I won't ever get it / will have to wait months to get the problem sorted out.

What do you suggest I do? Has anyone here received their green card - and can remember how it arrived - first class, or signed for? Do you remember if it had anything about DO NOT FORWARD on the envelope? Apparently this is the only thing that stops the USPS forwarding it....

Thank you all for any advice.

Jen xx

You must file an AR 11 form. Here is the information page and link to download the form. Good luck.

Jen,

My friend went through similar situation you have mentioned.

From what I recall, he filed an AR-11 form (like our friend Mary has posted above) and additionally he scheduled an infopass appointement at the local office where his/her file was before he moved and requested the address be changed and the file be transferred to the office local to his new address during the infopass appointment.

I think that sorted it all out in his case. Atleast from what I understood.

Don't worry, as much a USCIS seems difficult, eventually (usually) things work out.

File the AR-11 to indicate your change of address. I want to say there's a form for the USCIS person but I can't remember if it's necessary if your AOS is approved. Anyways, you should check the instructions and fill out the form. Submit it, or you could make an infopass appointment and basically hand it in there. If the misinformation line is running you around, go for the infopass and get it fixed!

In our case, our green cards came in with all our regular mail. Nobody had to sign for them.

If can manage it, perhaps you can do an INFOPASS with your DO and ask their assistance in getting the address changed.
