Man arrested on felony charge after entering Klein ISD elementary school armed and in tactical gear, court docs show

KLEIN, Texas — A man dressed in military-style clothing and carrying a holstered firearm entered Zwink Elementary School in Spring Tuesday, prompting a multi-agency investigation that led to a felony arrest, according to court documents and a letter from school officials.

Kyle Najm Chris, also known as Muhi Mohanad Najm, 39, of Klein, was charged with possession of a prohibited weapon, a third-degree felony, which prohibits carrying weapons on school premises. The Harris County District Attorney accepted the charges, and Chris was arrested at around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

According to the criminal complaint, Chris entered the front office of Zwink Elementary, which is located off Spring Stuebner and Frassati, at around 1:30 p.m. after slipping through the front entrance when another visitor failed to fully secure the door behind them. A school employee told investigators Chris was wearing full green military or tactical law enforcement attire, including a load-bearing vest, a taser and a holstered firearm.

They did.  It was the visitor that let him in.  He didn't get past the second set of secured doors, so the front office area.  The campus administrators called the armed security person on campus and the incident was addressed.  I saw the actual school released statement.  That said, good ole Harris County set his bond at a measly $75K. 

 

That said, there were 3 separate incidents on 3 different Klein ISD campuses last week.  One kid showed up with an unloaded handgun and was showing it to others.  He was arrested by campus police, emergency expelled and the ISD is pursuing felony charges.  On another campus, a kid brought a firearm and accidentally shot himself in the arm.  Klein ISD seems to have higher numbers of these incidents and now the parents have banded together and are in the process of starting a safety coalition.  The parents don't feel like there is sufficient response from district and state leadership.

Heard both parts of this.  This ISD seems particularly incompetent.

I can't really argue the incompetence part.  It seems that there are a lot of incidents in that district.  We've had issues, but we're also in MoCo so they take it pretty seriously.  There was a kid stabbed with a wooden stake on campus 2 years ago but the kids that stabbed were from a different school in district.  Something else happened that year too, but I can't remember what.  We haven't had many issues that way of late, knock on wood.  Our issue is the incompetent board so I suspect we'll see more issues because they are laying off support staff in an effort to save money after their outrageous overspending.  Kid2 only has the rest of this semester and then 2 more years in district and I cannot WAIT to be finished with it.

An Iraqi-Born Man Walks Into a School with a Gun.  Why Isn't He in Jail?

 

[...] there are a few problems here.  If a man walks into an elementary school with weapons, acts strangely, and refuses to identify himself, I'd consider him a danger to society.  Wouldn't you?  Even if there is the slightest chance that he could slip back over to the school and hurt these kids and staff members, there's no reason he should be out on bond.

 

Something else that has left many parents concerned is that they weren't notified about it until the next day.  The school sent out a letter stating that "Sending a public notification during that window could have jeopardized those efforts, tipped off the suspect, and delayed the arrest.  Law enforcement had the individual under constant surveillance today, and out of an abundance of caution, additional security measures were in place on campus, including increased police presence."  [...]
