I sponsored my stepdaughter and she has her residency.  She made the foolish mistake of having her child back in Colombia after getting pregnant.  There were complications with her childbirth and was not able to come back to the states.  The child is now 2 years old

Once she was well enough to travel, she did so and upon entry, had to apply for a parole which was recently approved for two years.

I've been looking at qualifications required for my stepdaughter to bring her child into the states, but she does not meet the financial part.

Is there a way for the grandparents to sponsor the grandchild as well so that the mother and daughter can come back to the States?  The father is out of the picture so, that's a non issue.

I know this is a complicated issue and I have very little hopes of any type of solution.  If anyone out there has gone through something similar, please let me know what I should look into.

Thank you

When you say your stepdaughter has 'her residency', what exactly do you mean? Is she a green card holder? And what do you mean 'parole', do you mean a re-entry permit? I'm assuming both of those but just want to confirm. Where is your stepdaughter now?

Grandparents can't petition a grandchild, but you could be a joint sponsor if your daughter petitioned her child, if she doesn't meet the financial requirements on her own.

No, grandparents can't sponsor a grandchild - there's no visa category for that. The child's mother should file I-130 like everyone else and wait for F2A visa number to become available. If she has re-entry permit, she can go stay with her child.

Thank you for your response.  Question.  Won't income play a part in the I-130 being approved?

You answered my question perfectly in your second sentence!  Thank you!   To elaborate, Yes.  She is a Green Card Holder.  On her last trip back to the states CBP suggested she request a Parole (re-entry permit) so that she could have the necessary required time to petition for her daughter, my grandchild. It recently was approved and she has two years to get everything done to get the child's visa approved.  My concern was that she would not be approved due to economic circumstances.  But if what your stating about us (the grandparents) co-sponsoring, then we should be good.

Thanks again for your response.

Of course but well after the I-130 is approved - at NVC stage. At that point she can complete her I-864 form and you can step in as a joint sponsor.

OK, so yes she can petition her daughter, and you can be joint sponsors to help financially.

But just to manage your expectations, there's pretty much no chance of her daughter getting a visa within 2 years. There's a waiting period for F2A applicants to get a visa. Currently those who applied in August 2022 or earlier are now becoming eligible for visas - https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/legal/visa-law0/visa-bulletin/2025/visa-bulletin-for-august-2025.html
