So I had my flight now booked for a later return date back to the US with my wife having to leave earlier. I am now considering changing my flight to the same date as hers because of the responses here. I think it is kinda sad that you gotta be concerned and can never really feel safe and assured. It should not be like this when you go through years of paperwork and thousands of dollars invested..

You can travel alone with a passport and a Green Card.  However, having your legal name on ALL documents might make entry quicker.

so for the future, updating my passport name would make sense. but isnt the whole greencard tied to that one passport? i wasnt sure if I can just change the name/get a new passport without having to do anything else

No.   If that was the case, you wouldn't have to carry your marriage certificate to tie the Green Card (new name) to the passport (old name).  Right now, you should carry your marriage certificate to connect the dots between your Green Card and your passport.

Nothing is required regarding your Green Card after renewing a passport.

No. People's passports expire / get lost all the time. Some green card holders don't even have passports.
