there has always been a pattern with DMV. Show them something that's not on their standard hand-out and they are lost. If you want to pick a fight with DMV you need to come prepared and not have anything else planned for that day. Sometimes I feel like picking a fight sometimes I don't.

Wow, thank you this is super valuable!

I almost attempted using PCC at SSA, but I just showed US passport to speed things up (wasn't in mood to try)

Ironically perhaps, when I later brought a PP book, a different official stated that the PP card would've been perfectly fine as a full proof of citizenship.

Here's a big one: Can the PP card be used to renew/replace the PP book? It is not explicitly stated on the DoS website as an example of sufficient evidence (at least the last time I checked it wasn't). Ideally, naturalized citizens won't have to use the Certificate of Naturalization ever again, after obtaining the first passport (so no mailing worries). As such, the PP card would be a great backup to the PP book, replacing the need for the CoN!

This is a good question, which I don't have answer to. Maybe it's a thing to try in 10 years? 😃

I'd argue certificate of naturalization is very important doc though. I know somebody close who couldn't get a government related job with passport and passport card. They needed to present certificate of naturalization specifically.

This can also happen at SSA when trying to get some benefits. Also, when sponsoring an immigrant, proving derivative citizenship for child or renewing passport. There's more and more stories of DOS asking for certificate again when renewing passport, many years later after successfully renewing it in the past without having to present it.

Think of it as "remember me" checkbox on website. Many times you wouldn't have to enter password again, but occasionally the security system will ask you to reenter password.

You wouldn't want to have to certificate when you're prompted for it.

I do believe PPC is useful to restore the certificate quicker if it's lost or damaged though.

Yeah, I know the CoN is very important - that's why I prefer to use other documents if possible, especially if mailing is involved. (How long does it take to replace the CoN if needed?)

Not according to State department

Do you still have the passport in your possession?

Note: If you want to renew both a valid passport book and passport card, you must submit both documents. For example, if you can submit a passport book, but you lost your passport card, you cannot renew the passport card. If you want to renew either a valid book or a card, you must submit the specific document you want to renew.

More important to me. How much does that run you now. Last time I looked it was already over $500,= and I'm sure its higher now. That's why I drove to DC to get my passport when I needed it. Had both in hand in 2hrs.

it’s not just how much it costs in dollars but also how much would it cost in time.

Heard a story few weeks ago where someone got their citizenship, got the passport, took care of other things and then they had a brilliant idea of shredding CON. They thought “why would I need this ever again”.

of course that came back to bite them when they had to renew something else and had to apply for CON again. Time and money both wasted.

No way, we need something similar to the Darwin Award for people shooting their own leg immigration wise.

This idea of shredding docs or evidence after naturalizing is somewhat popular amount some immigrants. I don't fully understand why. It's literally proof of how you became a citizen if you ever need to explain it to authorities. I can understand shredding easily available docs such as bank statements etc, but shredding notices etc... Not sure I'm a fan. I'm keeping all I-797 notices I received through AOS to naturalization and digital copies of those. Hopefully will never need it

I may be the other extreme but I have the first I-20 i got from the school when I first came to US. It’s been so long that most professors that taught me have long retired. As you said only shred documents like bank statements, bills as they are no longer valid and every place will ask for latest documents and nothing from 10 years ago. Shredding CON? I was just absolutely awestruck with the stupidity there.

Hi everyone,

I used the PPC twice: as ID in the spring of 2022 at the U.S. Consulate in Zurich, Switzerland (no problem).

Last month, I renewed my travel DL in AZ. The previous one had "limited term" on it, as it was issued when I was still with a GC. I used the PPC as proof of citizenship; at first they gave me the temporary paper DL with "limited term" still on it! I returned the paper to the clerk and told her I was a U.S. citizen. She asked to see the PPC again, and it went through smoothly without "limited term", both on the corrected paper DL and the new plastic DL that I received a week later.

Very surprising that a document that says nationality: US and says passport card at the top doesn’t reflect the right action at DMV. I get that you may not see a passport card that often but if the card has nationality dmv shouldn’t make these mistakes.

I believe it was a simple mistake of the clerk (it was a third-party provider for the DMV), because the second time it went without a problem. But it also shows that the system in itself does not always catch such mistakes - the fact I used a PPC did not prevent the system from giving me a license with a "limited term" designation.

I'm not. I'm sure it's not on the printed hand out that is taped right next to the system login and password on the monitor. It's not exclusive to DMV it's human nature.
