Hi everyone,

I live in US and a Vietnamese in-law living in Vietnam was approved a B-2 visitor visa .  I want to get traveler's insurance to cover the Vietnamese in-law while visiting U.S.  Does anyone have experience with getting one and if so share their experiences?

You should use a travel insurance comparison site such as Squaremouth and similar sites.  It will help you get a good idea of the difference coverages you can get, especially for medical.  That's how I got it for my fiancee.

By the way, can you please list the interview questions that your in-iaw got for her B2 interview.  Was this for an older in-law that is already retired, married, kids,??

I nearly went to Vietnam in 1999 but it was not to be. Now I do know in the UK Travel Insurance is advertised everywhere, and my impression is that a lot more Vietnamese travel now so assume there must be lots of options.

Obviously not cheap, well if it is there will be issues, the biggest lelemts is obviously Medial and Emergency Travel costs, make sure the limits are high.

My Mum was getting on and her Insurance was about the same as the flight for 2 weeks.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.  I need to read the fine print on these insurance policies.  One starts coverage after 7 days from the start date of the policy and has many exclusions.😦

As per the b-2 interview questions. my in-law says it was "easy peasy".

I recall these 5 questions or similar:

Do you have any children and family in Vietnam? How many in U.S.?

How many days are you visiting?

Who is paying for the trip?

Have you ever traveled to U.S before?

Did you apply for Visa before?

I think they want to know if  they can trust you to return to your home contry and have a place to stay and taken care of in the U.S.

good luck it shouldn;t be too hard!

You might want to include your copy of official IRS tax transcript to show you have means to pay for plane fare and related travel expenses if you are the person paying or whoever is paying.  I didn't know if it mattered if I included in the supporting documents but at the interview they took it for review I believe.  It didn't take much of my time so I just wrote a simple invitation letter explaining about the trip purpose, duration, location, accomodations and who is paying.  Perhaps it helped in convincing them to approve without contacting the sponsor.

We used WorldNomads 2017-2019 for visits before the K-1. See https://www.worldnomads.com/usa/travel-insurance. They provide emergency, non-routine medical coverage up to $5m. This gave us peace of mind when biking, hiking, and kayaking. We now use them for family members who visit. They have 12 month plans that cover multiple trips across multiple countries, if desired.

For US residents with US health insurance traveling outside the US, the GeoBlue by BlueCross BlueShield plan covers non-emergency medical expenses in almost every country outside the US. A GeoBlue policy is void without US health insurance. For more serious ailments, GeoBlue reserves the right to require you to travel back to the US for follow-on treatment. I have been subscribed to it for over a decade. I later put my spouse on it after the green card was received.

We have never had to use either of these insurances.
