More documentation requested

Hello Folks, thank you for reading and for your help every step of this journey.

 

I hit a snag in my process and I don’t know how worried I should be. I got my interview today and I passed all the civic questions today , the problem came when they checked my taxes as the payment plan I had with the IRS had stopped. The officer was kind and told me i passed everything else but was unable to give me a final answer. She will request my taxes from the last 5 years and a letter that says i have set a payment plan. Now , how long will this set me back? Is it ok if i just provide my tax transcripts and a letter that shows i have a new payment plan. Im working on that with the IRS. 
My feelings are all over the place and i dont know how worried i should be. 
 

has anyone been in a similar situation?

You'll get your citizenship some time, no doubt. Question is, why didn't you upload IRS tax return transcripts when you filed N-400 or went to interview?

 

Did you get a formal RFE?

I did, but for the latest tax period, I owe money, and they want to see that I have set up a payment plan. I had a payment plan, but the IRS stopped it for some reason. So, I called today and set up a new payment plan, which will take some time. Thanks for the reassurance. I feel... a lot of things.

If I recall correctly USCIS checks 2 things regarding income tax for applicants.

- have all applicable years been filed, if not is there a valid reason for that (for instance you have filed an extension).

- Have all owed taxes been payed. If there are any back taxes/fines owed to the IRS, is there a record of these taxes/fines being payed (the payment plan).

 

The actual wording was way more legal but I think that was what it boiled down to. If this is still the case, your RFE could be cleared by the new payment plan.

 

To cover your rear, I suggest maintaining all records of the new payment plan. This include phone logs (times + name of person you talked to), emails, screen shots of your online account showing the plan is in place. 

 

As for how long this will take, that's anyone's guess. could be a few weeks, could be several months.

I just got an update on the uscis website that says:

 

Cancellation Notice for Request for Additional Evidence
On June 5, 2025, we cancelled the request for additional evidence for your Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, We will send you a notice if we need additional evidences. Please follow the instructions in the notice. If you move, go to www.uscis.gov/addresschange to give us your new mailing address.

 

So is this a good thing?

Sounds like RFE was cancelled. But I wouldn't be surprised if you receive both letters: one requesting evidence and one saying request was cancelled. They can even arrive in wrong order or together. You may get cancellation first, then request.

 

If this happens, I'd reply to RFE even if you receive cancellation. The last thing you want is USCIS playing games saying you didn't reply to RFE, even if they cancelled it.

 

If you get approval or "Oath will be scheduled" status soon, then I'll hold off replying to RFE unless you're too close to deadline.

I'd have the proof of plan ready to go regardless; part of me feels you should upload it despite the newest notice...

Well i am in sort of a similar situation. My dad had his interviewed. Passed everything. We have a payment plan set up with the IRS that starts in September. The adjudicating officer said that she needs to discuss this with her supervisor and left it at that. the very next day my mother had her interview. She was approved immediately with the SAME EXACT documentation. So I am confused on what is going on. I am making an assumption that if my mom's was approved with the same threshold my dad's should be approved too but not sure how long it will take to make the decision. 

 

As for you I think you are good. The RFE cancellation means they are satisfied and you should be getting an approval soon!

The cancellation was canceled in the end, they still requested I send everything by the date they requested the information. I had to send proof that i had a payment plan by july 9th. I haven't received a response.

Update: August 22nd

I got a letter with my Oath Ceremony date for mid September. 

I see the light at the end of the tunnel!
