i864 RFE help

Hi all!
PD is 02/14/2025 for my i485, husband is a USC. A few days ago we received an RFE for the i864, I believe this is because our lawyer did not update our household size after my baby was born when we filed initially. Our lawyer is asking $1000 to respond to the RFE which after paying $5000 for the initial filing isn't financially feasible for us.

She has strongly advised against us firing her and finishing the case out ourselves because the i864 RFE is apparently difficult?
 

Would ya'll agree with this? I don't want to mess anything up. Also a second question in case we do self file. We live with my MIL in her finished basement, however our finances are in no way co-mingled. Would we include her in the total household size? She is going to be a joint sponsor because my husband hasn't worked very long so I imagine USCIS would scrutinize if we left her put then they saw her address is the same. Thanks in advance

Are you sure she's a lawyer? A real lawyer, not a notario?

 

Why this ridiculous pricing?

You can do it yourself, of course, but you need to know what you're doing. It is indeed somewhat complex, but not impossible.

Honestly I have no idea, we didn’t shop around much for lawyers as she was recommended by a family friend and had good reviews. However she has honestly actively delayed our case with filing errors and poor communication. The initial package was rejected not once but twice.

 

RFE responses weren’t included in the flat fee which I was aware of but I didn’t expect we would need an RFE because she said everything looked good 🤦‍♀️

 

I have some basic immigration knowledge and responding myself doesn’t seem impossible. Thank you for the response

Can you post all pages of the RFE here (with any personal information, receipt numbers, A-Number, etc. redacted) so we can see what USCIS is asking for?

Lawyer does not know the info to complete the I 864 

this is your info and u need to fill out the form and make sure all is correct and then sign

 

so, this lawyer wants $1000 for u to do the work ,  hand it to him to just mail it in?

Here are the pages, it doesn’t specify why the original i864 wasn’t suitable. The second page is too large to upload, it basically just provides information about a joint sponsor and using assets to show finances instead of just income. Can compress it and add it if need be

Basically yes, my husband is only 20 and has worked since he turned 18 so I’m guessing the issue was maybe that his tax records were insufficient?

 

We get by but certainly aren’t rich, and I’m not interested in paying the lawyer $1000 when we are already filling forms in ourselves 😅

If lawyer has no photos showing law college degree,  i would say not 

they all hang them proudly in their office

Thank you everyone for the advice  My husband has fired out lawyer and we will respond ourselves. Do ya'll know if I should include MIL in the household size or not?
