Plan to live near a train line. Out here, it's the only way to go. Driving into center city Philly is hell.

NJ Transit - http://www.njtransit.com/images/railmap06.jpg -- pay close attention to the towns along the Atlantic City Line and River Line. Some very nice communities along those lines at affordable prices. Also some not-so-nice communities so visit first.

Philly isn't terrible in winter.

That said, I personally would stay in California, I much prefer living in CA (even in the Valley). IF your lady is looking for Universities has she considered the new UC campuses? Merced for instance? There are some Cal State uni's around too.

Depends on what you like doing in life really - in the summer the heat in Philly is pretty comparable to the valley, but it will be humid aswell. I didn't mind visiting Philly but i don't think i'd particularly want to live there, and I don't imagine that the cost of living would be much less than living in the central valley.

@Stina:  regarding yer granny. and the culture shock thingie. do you really think it is that different?

....

Yeah I do think it's pretty different. When my dad was a teen he moved from Philadelphia to Albuquerque NM for a couple years because he knew a friend there(he went alone, not with his parents). And he said it was very different, more laid back, more hippy-ish. Though that was awhile ago(early 70s). He liked New Mexico but moved back to PA for family reasons and then later moved to NYC to marry my mom. My dad has never missed Philly. I am sure they have some cool stuff there, and he has talked about interesting things there. But to live there is a different story. As others said, visit before you decide. You may like the change, but you may not. :)

For those saying winter is not bad there, you are telling that to a California boy! And I am in Florida and yes winters there are BAD compared to living in a warmer climate. We don't get snow here. I bet Daniel doesn't either. If you are from Canada that's a different story. Daniel would be moving from sunny California. So it would be a drastic weather change in the winters.

This is very good advice. You should check these out.

And yes, being from Canada is a little different than being from CA and talking about the weather in philly. You may find it miserable because you are not used to it. However, moving around is good, even if for a little bit. People could use with the change and getting out of their comfort zones a little.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

ok. time for an update. turns out the office will be either in King Of Prussia or West Chester. So NOT in Philly. hmmm i take it these are the 'burbs. anybody got insight to this area?

we decided if we do go, not to sell our house. to rent it out. we still are carrying a mortgage so we run the risk of paying rent and mortgage.

now i am trying to figure out what it would cost to rent a house in them areas. google/yahoo have not been too helpful.

if we can make the numbers work, we most likely will go for. but that needs to be figured out plus the entire work situation is a definitely turbulent at the moment.

y'all take carfe now.

I live just oustide of Philly(I mean literally 2 blocks out of the city), in a little town called Rockledge, I love it. I am only paying $650 for a one bedroom apartment. The houses in my neighborhood range from $240,000.00 to $400,00.00. I just saw a house for rent-I think it was a 3 bedroon & it was $1250.00 a month. The schools in that neighborhhod are great. I think there are a lot of great things about Philadelphia.

The food(it is too good)

the weather....it does get hot in the summer & cold in the winter, but it is not as extreme as other places. we do not have tornadoes, or have to worry about hurricanes or earthquakes. In my opinion, we are in a great location.

The people are great-well not the ones that shoot eachother

If you have any questions pm me-I would be happy to help ya!

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).
