One Way Travel Insurance

When we arrive on the IR1 into the U.S and have the I-551 stamp placed into my wife's passport, at that point she, as the new LPR can get Obama Care. Me, the U.S.C will be covered too, although perhaps before we arrive. I understand that there is a wait for enrollment into Obama Care though, depending on when you sign up and you also have 30 or 60 days to do this for the Special Enrolment Period.

Looking at options for travel insurance has been a real challenge. I can't get normal travel insurance, as were not returning and what one way insurance I can find, either expires within 48 hours, or 31 days at most.

I'd appreciate the thoughts of what people did between leaving the U.K and having ACA compliant healthcare Stateside. Did anyone get short term coverage from the U.K, or indeed from the U.S that can cover a LPR straight away? Perhaps international medical coverage like Bupa offer?

Thank you

There is short term insurance available for purchase online   in the US. As with travel insurance it is often very limited cover .. catastrophic events only, no routine medical appts, no cover for preexisting conditions,  no medication etc .. but its better than nothing in case of accident etc. Google “ short term medical insurance USA. Bring a good supply of medication in original packing and make a call to the ACA navigator team in your state the day after you arrive. Get SSN asap and back accounts etc as you will need evidence of residential address for many things.  If it feels like a never ending spiral

into a dark hole .. that’s exactly what it is. But you will get there. Use the time before you arrive to get a ls much info and process clear in your mind and on paper. Good luck

Google New Immigrant Insurance. I do not know of any I would recommend but either that or take the risk.

I have been out of the biz for a long time and there certainly not anything in the UK back then, not an obvious market for a UK Insurer but who knows now.

Thee is Global Insurance, I seem to remember CIGNA was at least one insurer who did it aimed at the Global Senior Exec market, seems overkill for this.

I did actually take a look, but don’t meet the age criteria for Back Pack Cover! Thank you for your help with your other comments too. Im going to get a few broker/agents invoked in Florida, maybe short term cover for a couple of months. I’d be able to get one way travel insurance here with a 31 day expiration to cover the bags/cancellation and medical. Double coverage, but better to be sure.

My memory is not what it is but I thought this lot did new immigrant insurance, they mention immigrant in the title but then talk about travel, might be worth a call.

My husband got here on Dec 12 and his coverage begins through the exchange on Jan 1. Since it isn’t a long wait, we didn’t think it necessary to bother trying to find something for that two week period. But I’m sure if you search for short term insurance in the US though something extravagantly priced will pop up!

Even if you’re fit and well, it’s those unexpected accidents that could cause devastating  financial consequences for the uninsured. Putting one’s hand in one’s pocket for medical coverage is a part of everyday life in the U.S. Ultimately premiums are so tiny compared with the hundreds of thousands of dollars of bills that you’d be faced with.

New immigrant short term insurance is what some use. I can tell you though you'll pay a premium and not actually be covered for much if at all. Of course finding a doctor that actually accepts it will be another challenge. In the end, you'll pay for peace of mind that's not really peace of mind. Of course plenty of people still do it. Absolutely get signed up for real health insurance asap.
