4,000 people a week trying to emigrate from Great Britain - almost all young professionals aged 20-40

Britain is facing a mass exodus of people looking to escape the crime and grime of modern living.

The country’s biggest foreign visa consultancy firm has revealed that applications have soared in the last seven months by 80 per cent to almost 4,000 a week. Ten years ago the figure was just 300 a week.

Most people are relocating within the Commonwealth – in Australia, Canada and South Africa. They are almost all young professionals and skilled workers aged 20-40.

And many cite their reason for wanting to quit as immigration to these shores – and the burden it is placing on their communities and local authorities. The dearth of good schools, spiralling house prices, rising crime and tax increases are also driving people away.

Wonder how long it will be before USA models that scenario.

The US is a lot larger than the UK. That model is already playing out in certain parts of the US. There is plenty of domestic outmigration from places like NY and NJ into cheaper, nicer, areas.

Locally speaking, my neighborhood is going to hell and my property taxes just went up 1k.

Denver has changed dramatically in the 12+ yrs i've been here thats for sure. not as bad as the NYC/NJ area by any stretch of the imagination, but still rediculously high.

average house cost here in Denver keeps climbing to over $220K now. first time buyers of course now with the sub-prime issues find it harder to get loans at decent rates. Startin to shift back to where one needs 10%-20% down.

It's losing two more "young professionals and skilled workers aged 20-40" in 13 days when we up sticks... Crime, grime and overcrowding have done it for us.

This is true. Lots of people are moving out of our area, although it is mostly people over 40 or 50, to the midwest or just west where it is cheaper and a lot less densley populated. If my husband wasn't so attached to this state, and it wasn't so close to my family in Canada, than I'd ask to move! Our next mouth will be to south jersey because we cannot afford housing in north jersey. 400k for a starter home with 12k/yr property taxes? Yeah...right.

Where do you live in nj VJ troll?

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

The USA must curtail legal immigration to saner, historically traditional levels and eliminate illegal immigration altogether because the current rates are not sustainable without further lowering and degrading the quality of life that we have enjoyed in the past. I can remember what the USA was like 100,000,000 people ago and I don't want to see it increase another 1000,000,000 in my lifetime. There are more important things in life than increasing market share and putting $$$ in corporate America's pockets.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

Unless the UK stops immigration and tries to manage the number of people it already has, more and more people will look to emigrate. My parents live in central london and house prices just keep rising as demand increases. Wages are not rising in alignment with house prices, and the pressure for social housing and benefits has overwhelmed the system. People are sick and tired of paying tax upon tax upon tax to keep the country going. There is not enough room or money for the numbers now residing in the UK.

Well, NJ and CT are the richest states in the US. No surprise that prices are high (they always have been).

FL is pretty cheap. The average home price here is about $130K, though average houshold income is something like $36K. But, you can afford a house here on that.

House prices will probably be coming down or flat for some time to come. With all of the mortgage problems, rates are going up. That will almost certainly mean prices going down or being flat.

I'm in Middlesex county.

Where in South Jersey do you plan a move to? I was looking at homes in the Barnegat area, good value but the commute to this area would be hell. Same thing for the Lehigh Valley.
