PS: After you start the treatment you can not wax ever again .....just use the razor until you are 100% free of the hair... If you wax, a new hair will grow in the place of the one removed, and would be the same of starting from zero every time. Just waste of money.

Also the ointment is a must. You can't do the treatment without being numb. Just make sure to read the instructions before...and make a test, since there is a limitation of the area of your body that can be covered at once, and never use in a hurt skin. I used to use on my entire legs, armpits and Bikini line and felt dizzy few times but that was my tolerance...Never go beyond the tolerance. Do it responsibly. Good Luck :thumbs:

Ok, this has gotten me curious... How dark does your skin have too be before it is too dark to use this process?

As far as I know it's not about being dark....but being tanned !! That's the difference... You can not have exposition to the sun during the treatment...I mean go to the pool or beach and spend a lot of time there to cast a tan.... I even know a black man that have done the laser and it worked pretty well. It would be better to visit a doctor and have an evaluation for your case. The darker & thicker the hair, the better and faster results you're going to get !!

Cool! didn't know that! thanks!

PS Is there a certain type of technology I should be looking for?

I saw online yesterday something called Levulevin or something or the other..

I used the one called Light Sheer..... I know that they control the intensity of the laser depending on the area it's being applied, there is a kind of "cooler" in the pistol, they use a conduit gel too...like the one they put in your belly during a ultrasom, you must use a special goggles to protect your eyes...and during the applications on my armpits I could smell the "burned" hair...it was funny.... You can fell something like schock waves ...but it's a gentle sensation and doesn't hurt usualy. .If you notice your skin full of red dots around each folicule (readness) after the treatment it means that they got it right....and in my case it would disappear the day after.

What do you think being tan means? The melanin in your skin turns that color in response to sunlight. Someone that is dark is dark because of more melanin in the skin. Laser works on the premise that the light energy is absorbed by the darker hair follicle which in turn is supposed to kill it. If you have a lot of melanin in your skin, the laser will not see a difference between this dark color and the color of the hair follicle. Do a search to see how many darker skinned people have this done. It won't be very high. They are not an ideal candidate. They may be treated with less energy which will in most cases only stun the follicle and the hair will grow back. If you are getting this done, just please go to someone that deals with this and isn't going to do it just to get your money.

Good explanation, but I think I had a better one from my doctor, and I’m sharing. That’s why anyone interested in this treatment should consult a specialist (doctor). From where I come there are 3 very popular laser treatments, and only the most moderns can be applied on brown and dark skin without risk to cause marks on this type of skin. They are:

Photoderm (LID): based on the pulse light method and it’s ideal to people with light skind and dark hair;

Epilaser (Ruby Laser): ideal to people with light skind and dark hair ;

Light Sheer (Diode Laser): this is the most recent and can also be used by people with brown and black skind and even tanned sometimes . The Light Sheer method protects the skin, therefore can be used by any kind or skin color. This method is also very recommended for facial treatment.

I went to a very reputable safe place with a licensed dermatologist attending, who also performed the treatment. I took advice first, she evaluated my skin and then we started the treatment safely and responsibly. At least in Brazil it's very popular to people with brown/dark skin, because most of the population has this skin color. :thumbs:

BTW: The Light Sheer Diode laser treatment was developed by the Harvard Medical School and was approved by the FDA in 1997. Here is an interesting article about the tests performed by Harvard. It explains how the laser works.

Good luck to all those who will try it !! :thumbs:

"Who is a good candidate for LightSheer laser treatment?

The ideal candidate has dark hair and light skin. Darker hair absorbs more of the laser light, and lighter skin interferes less with the movement of the laser light into the hair follicle. Dark or tan skin runs a higher risk of pigmentation changes following the procedure. Keep in mind that it's not impossible to treat darker skined individuals. Dark skin requires a test patch first and will require more visits using more conservative settings. Your laser technician can determine during your initial consultation if you are a good candidate."

from: http://www.apiderm.com/ltsheer.htm

More conservative settings means a good possibility of just stunning the follicle.

I've always wanted to do it. I don't have much hair, but I sure wish I didn't have to wax, pluck and shave ever again. It is expensive though. I had a friend who did it and it she said it hurts a bit, and in the armpits it hurts more.

I never felt pain in my armpits..pain is really "personal" in this situation...depends on the sensitiveness of each person. I felt most of the pain around my bikini area..

She didn't do the bikini line and she's pretty sensitive, so I guess compared to the legs her armpits hurt more.

What I do hear, is that laser is not permanent. That it lasts for 5-10 years and then the hairs start regrowing, like the follicule regenerates.

Nobody can assure for how long you will be free of the hair, once this is a personal matter, meaning your body is unique and react differently from any other...you can spend the rest of your life without the hair...as well have you hair re-growth in some areas, since hormonal issues are involved, environment, etc... I know that here in the USA they can not / void using the term "permanent" or "definitive" (but I have seen in many advertisements). I couldn’t finish my treatment yet, and after 4applications a lot of hair has gone. The remaining ones are very few and week....they grew thinner than ever...almost imperceptive...and they were thick before...But since we have the capacity of regeneration...results on your case depends on you !!

I have such pale skin that I can't even find makeup that matches my tone exactly- but my hair is all DARK brown. -_- even when I shave you see dark brown spots on my legs where the roots are. I've wanted to get this done really badly- but I'm afraid of long term side-effects that may not be seen yet. :[
