If you had an actual i-751 interview, what did they ask you? What documents did they require?

Just got home from my interview this morning. It went great. The officer said to look out for my greencard in to come within 4 weeks. But I just got this notice. Can anyone explain 🤔?

@OldUser, thank you kindly. Great advice! At this point, my only concern is my husband's memory, hahaha. The interaction below is fictitious, but could very well happen in our relationship:

Me: "What did we have for dinner last night?"

Him: "No idea"

Me: "What did we do last Saturday?"

Him: "Uhhhhhhhhhhh..."

Me: "Quick! Close your eyes! What am I wearing right now?"

Him: "..."

Me: "What's the part type and number of that little thing that broke on your RC car?"

Him: "Oh, that's RC1xcd43, it's far superior to RC1xcd42 as it's got more a, b, c, d (insert highly technical terms here whooshing over my head)" 😅

You both went through a stokes interview already and succeeded with far less evidence than what you'll bring tomorrow.

Think about the interview as an opportunity to brag about how awesome your husband and kid are! Not a potential stokes interview. I think you guys will do great.

I’ve been up since 4:40 (little dude needed some cuddles, fell right back asleep and left mama wide awake). I’m now enjoying a quiet cup of coffee before waking everyone up to head over to San Francisco and face whatever they have in store for us.

Hi, everyone! 

My interview was scheduled for 8:35 today and it started at around 9 a.m. The officer called my name and I asked if my husband and son should come in too, to which he said yes. So yay for no second stokes interview!

 

The officer was very patient, pleasant, and understanding. Very professional. My son started getting fussy and the officer let us play videos to distract the lil’ dude (I gotta give it to the lil’ guy, he was SO good! I had to wake him up earlier than his usual wake-up time, get him dressed, and put him in straight in the car seat. He didn’t cry at all during the whole car drive, which took a little over one hour)

 

The officer said he would conduct a combo interview and would start with the removal of conditions first. He asked questions about where we lived during the last 3 years, where we worked, when and where we traveled internationally, when and where we got married, how we met, etc. at the end of that interview, the officer escorted my husband and son out so he could conduct the naturalization interview with me. He did so and stopped at 6 civic questions, as I got them all right. The questions he asked were: What did the Declaration of Independence do? We elect a president for how many years? What is one thing Abraham Lincoln is known for? Who is the governor of our state? What’s the capital of our state? What is one right or freedom from the first amendment?

 

The officer said I passed the civics test as well as the reading and writing portion. He also told me he could not make a decision on my I-751, as he had to review the documentation (he did take a few copies of documents I brought with me - and that I had already submitted; namely, our child’s birth certificate and my divorce decree from my first marriage). I offered him supplemental documentation and he said “nah”… He said I should expect a response through U.S. mail in 3 to 4 weeks. He said it could be one of the two: either an RFE specifying what other documentation they needed in order to make a decision or, “most likely” (those were his words), a letter with the date for my oath ceremony. He said, and I quote “It shouldn’t be a problem, you guys have a kid together”.  So the waiting game continues, which is not surprising, but a little disappointing, as I (naively) started daydreaming about a same-day oath ceremony (i know, I know, I should have known better, haha).
 

Even though I am glad I took lil’ dude with me, I also feel so bad for him, as it messed up his routine and, while I was being interviewed for the n400, according to my husband, lil’ dude lost his mind as mama was not there. He had a massive meltdown for almost the whole duration of the interview. Poor guy is also teething (2-year molars). He slept the whole way home.

Oh, I forgot to mention: the officer also asked me if I was planning on going on any international trips in the next few months (I am not). He then said that, after I surrender my green card (during the naturalization/oath-taking appointment), if I were to leave the country before a US passport is issued, it would be very, very difficult to return to the US. He made sure I understood that. I told him it made sense and thanked him for the info.

“Interview Cancelled And Notice Ordered 

On August 10, 2023, we cancelled your interview for your Form I-751, Petition to Remove Conditions on Residence, Receipt Number WAC229xxxxxxxx, and mailed you a cancellation notice. We will notify you by mail if the appointment is rescheduled, a decision is made, or if we need something from you. Please follow any instructions in the notice. If you do not receive your notice by September 9, 2023, please go to www.uscis.gov/e-request to request a copy of the notice. If you move, go to www.uscis.gov/addresschange to give us your new mailing address.”

 

The second one, about the N400, says:

Oath Ceremony Will Be Scheduled

Oath Ceremony Will Be Scheduled	August 10, 2023
We recommended that your Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, be approved. Your case was submitted for quality review

 

 

Soooooo… Do you think that the update on my i-751 was not “case was approved” because it would trigger the issuance of a 10-year green card that I would have to surrender soon thereafter? Or is there some other reason? 

 

Can I celebrate yet? I’m half confused, half happy, and I want to be 100% happy, lol.

You can celebrate when you have certificate of naturalization in hand.

 

Most likely though, your immigration journey is about to end, e.g. hopefully you'll have your oath soon!

USCIS sure likes to keep things exciting for you. 

I would schedule a celebration for the day of and/or after the oath ceremony.
But, I’ve seen the “interview cancelled” after said interview for a few people and the theory it is because they don’t want to trigger the printing of a card makes sense.

Question: how long does it usually take for USCIS to schedule the oath date when the status is “oath ceremony will be scheduled”? And do they usually schedule it like a month away or does it not have any rhyme or reason?
