Travel while waiting for greencard?

Hello all my wife is from Thailand unfortunately we will be sending our I751 out on Sept 1st, I have to send it to NSC so from what I have been reading it takes about 8 months to receive the green card. My question can we travel out of the country while we are waiting for the 10 yr green card? Thanks, Pete and Nutchanat from Chicago.

You shouldn't have any problems traveling. After you apply to remove conditions, the 1st NOA you receive will extend the GC for one year. Have that handy with the original GC when your wife returns to the US.

You will receive a notice of receipt for the form stating that "Your alien card is extended one year - employment and travel authorized". Keep the receipt with your green card. If by some chance you are not approved within a year you will want to make an InfoPass appointment to go to your Local Office to request an I-551 stamp in your passport. This does happen as it sometimes it takes over a year to be approved. After your NOA extension expires, this is your only evidence of legal status which you are required to have, by law. This happens occasionally, that a case takes over a year, but it's rare.

Thats is good to know because we plan to go to Thailand in May and we were worried that the GC wouldnt be there on time, so after the first NOA it automatically extends the temporary GC?

If you are out of the country and your CGC has expired. You need to have in your hands while traveling your NOA. If not the NOA, then an I-551 stamp. My wife and I forgot to bring with us the NOA and when we came back into the country, they threatened to fine us $260.00.

I just returned from a trip abroad, and while it took a few extra minutes to get through immigration (Philadelphia -- had to go to the "special processing" room with my NOA) everything went smoothly. I was asked by the immigration officer why I didn't have a I-551 stamp, so I responded that my understanding is that the NOA is sufficient (and I don't know if the Boston office even gives them if you have your NOA), which he agreed with. He didn't give me an I-551 stamp and was somewhat surprised at the length of time it's taken thus far for my 10 year GC to be processed. I muttered something about Vermont being slow... I'm going out of the country again in 2 weeks time, so am keeping my fingers-crossed that by some miracle I will have my new GC by then... ahh, wishful thinking...

My husband and I traveled back from Scotland on July 1st, through Newark. He was not asked to go in another room, nor was he asked about the stamp. He just showed his NOA1 letter and his expired greencard and we were through in no time.
