Hi all,

Anyone have any luck ever getting a SSN for a USC child while living overseas?

We fly back to America on Christmas and would be great to get my daughter a SSN so we get the benefits.

Tried endless emails and calls no one ever picks up at the SSN Department in Frankfurt

Yikes… no hope for me.

Well that OP did get an SSN for the child. I don’t see why you think it is hopeless, especially since your child will be with you in the USA to apply for an SSN.  Should be cut and dried.

I am flying on Christmas. I know I can get the ssn next year and claim The benefits.

But would be nice to get the benefits for this year too.I am in Germany and the SSN department for the Frankfurt consulate just doesn’t pick up or respond. It’s frustrating.

Tax benefits. In my city there are only 2 schools for my 3 year old. One costs $13,000 a year and the other costs $6500. A $4000 child tax credit would help with some of those costs.

I have my doubts that as a U.S. citizen living over seas, you will get a child tax credit.  And regardless, I personally  never a dine of a child tax credit for the 20 years of my life that I had children under age 18. I was simply not poor enough.

Regardless if your child gets an SSN in 2023, you can attempt to claim the tax credit on your 2022 tax return. You actually have 3 years to file or amend a tax return for the purpose of reducing your tax burden.

But given the foreign income tax exclusion for citizens who live abroad and given the foreign income  tax credit for everyone, I doubt you will see any  child tax credit.

I don’t “live” here. I’ve been traveling Europe and Asia. I pay my taxes, in the higher tax bracket, have a pretty successful digital business. I even pay my property taxes, mortgage, and monthly house bills even though I’m traveling.

It’s not about your income. Every US citizen with a child at a certain age qualifies for up to 4 tax credit (refund) a year of up to a certain amount, usually around $4000.

I’m not a tax professional either, my CPA told me about this. And he’s told me I won’t be able to claim tax credit for this year if I don’t get her SSN this year.

 Um, not exactly….

For the 2022 tax year, the CTC is worth $2,000 per qualifying dependent child if your modified adjusted gross income is $400,000 or below (married filing jointly) or $200,000 or below (all other filers).

Also, I think you’re misunderstanding the difference between tax credit and tax refund.  Might want to Google that.
