CR1 and CR2 in different processing centers

I filed separate I130’s for my husband and 18 year old stepson who are both overseas.  They’re being processed at two different service centers.  One has a longer processing time than the other.  What if they get approved 3 months apart?  Will the first one have to wait until the second one catches up or could they potentially go through NVC/consular process separately?  I’ve heard of these getting “joined” together at NVC but how does that happen?

You can delay the one which gets to NVC first.  Delay paying NVC fees or submitting documents until the second one arrives there.  Then pay fees and submit documents for both.  Then contact NVC and the consulate to request they be interviewed together.

They will  be processed separately. However it is possible to request the NVC to link the two and by “ drip feeding “ the paperwork at NVC for the more advanced petition, create the opportunity for both to finish up at the Consulate  at the same time

Do I have to delay the one that gets to NVC first?  Suppose my husband’s case gets approved first…could I get his moved along all the way to the interview and then my stepson’s just follows after?  I guess what I’m asking is if my husband could end up getting here to the US first and my stepson follows later?  He’s 18 years old so traveling alone isn’t an issue but I don’t know if it’s ever done that way or if the 2 cases have to be kept together.

Yep. Can do that if the IR2 is able to manage without the parent   The 2 petitions are completely separate so processing , interviewing , granting  visa and then entering the US one at a time is fine   Whoever's is done  first can  travel.
