How can I do I get a job whilst awaiting my Social Security Number?

Hi,

I moved out to the US a week ago having had my IR1 visa approved. I am now currently waiting for my Social Security Card to arrive, however I was told by the Customs Officer at my Port of Entry that I can apply for a job whilst waiting on my Social Security Number.

All the job applications I've looked at so far have asked for my SSN, which I haven't got yet. What can I do in this situation?

Thanks!

Ben

Have you tried just entering 000-00-0000 or some other random string of numbers?

But more importantly, what kind of jobs are requiring you to disclose your SSN just to apply? All the legit online job applications I've seen require uploading a resume, but never something as confidential as an SSN.

I haven't tried entering 0's no, but I will do now that you've given me the idea!

It's literally just an application for Amazon!

I tried the 0's - didn't work!

That's too bad. I did a little more digging and looks like some employers DO require an SSN just to proceed with a job application: https://www.thebalancecareers.com/can-an-employer-ask-for-your-social-security-number-2062157

If it was me, I'd focus on applying for jobs that don't require disclosing an SSN right now.

leave it blank

if it is online application and does not go pass the SS part  ,  print out the application and hand fill it in

as far as the employer is concerned ,  they will collect all info such as name ,  address ,   and until u get a SS # , they report it as 000-00-0000

and when u get your SS # and provide it to employer  ,  they use Form W-2c to inform IRS of all info.

You could try finding who the recruiter or hiring manager is for the position you're applying to and let them know your situation. They could possibly get a special application for you or just pass it in the right hands for the time being.
