It doesn't matter. I used pen and then put the pictures in baggies stapled to a plain sheet of paper.

I think a felt tiped pen would be best since less pressure is required. The object is to not make an indentation on the photo that can be seen on the picture side.

All of these are fine. Use a pen, pencil, label maker. Just make sure if you use a ball point pen not to press so hard as if makes indentations and ruins the pic as Ron/Sharon said. I too put them in baggies and stapled it to a plain sheet of paper.

I guess it's a good idea not to press too hard but this picture is just a file picture. At most, it is used so the interviewer can compare it to the face and passport of the applicant. The passport pictures brought to the interview are the ones used for the visa.

I used a fine tip sharpie and also put them inside one of those ziploc sandwich bags stapled to a blank sheet of paper.
