Oh, my goodness. Then you really have not been to Virginia. I live here. It's mostly rural. Maybe you've only been to D.C. which is not really in Virginia after all?

Ok..... but why?

Why is it so important to VA to enforce speed limits?

i don't know why either, every place i've seen in virginia you can't drive the speed limit anyways due to congestion

One of the reasons is that there is a lot of wildlife in Virginia. People hit deer and bear, not to mention smaller animals. Hitting animals that large not only kills them it can kill someone in the car or cause a lot of material damage. I doubt you would have to worry too much about that in Alexandria. Wildlife has been killed out or run out of that area.

Good point!

I actually get to reverse commute on 66 and head west out of DC as everyone else is trying to get in. So once I get past the Beltway, traffic in the left lane is usually moving at least 70-75. Speed limit is 55, but you will get run over even in the right lane if you try and do that.

Yeah, I may have to move up to West Virginia Clarky and Tarah!

Well, DC is certainly not in Virginia, but Arlington certainly is. As is Norfolk, which is where I think Charles has spent a little bit of time recently. While I will agree that much of Virigina is rural, there is obviously a lot of congestion in Northern VA. Now, if you think that Northern Virginia isn't like the rest of the state, I will agree with that.

Umm, there actually is quite a bit of wildlife still left in the Alexandria/Arlington/Fairfax areas. Can't tell you how much roadkill I pass on 66 and the GW parkway. Including a seagull one time. Still haven't figured that one out yet. But seeing deer, racoon, fox, groundhogs, skunks, etc. is pretty much a daily occurence for me. So far I have been lucky with only near misses, but more than a few of my coworkers have hit deer on their way to work in Fairfax. And, yes, that can get ugly.

I can believe that as I saw yesterday evening (when we went out for a short walk along Bel Pre Rd, in Silver Spring***) a deer which had been hit (on the other side of Bel Pre Rd--only about a block from our complex!).

***Although this is in suburban MD rather than VA; but suburban VA--such as Alexandria, McLean, Oakton is generally similar.

20 miles over the speed limit is like 40 km over the speed limit

there should be a stiff penalty for that. it's just reckless

Do you drive? 20MPH over the speed limit is commonplace on highways.

So is death.

Ever seen what happens to someone and their family who hits something at 75 mph or over 120 if it is a head on collision.. Not a pretty site.

This is why I usually drive the speed limit on the highways, unless the flow of traffic won't allow it (too slow OR too fast). I don't want to die, but equally I would prefer not to kill anyone.

75mph or 120mph or 180mph -- the result is the same - you die.

i think they will make a killing on fines based on tickets on 81... bristol, roanoke, harrisonburg, winchester... crazy drivers all up and down the 300+ miles of it in virginia... cops are all over that road... i travel that stretch at least once a year and get blown off the road (almost literally) by the speeding 18wheelers...

the scariest time was during a beastly rainstorm that i couldnt see even 2 carlengths ahead of me... i was watching for an exit to pull off and just wait it out... those trucks were blasting by me so fast that it was literally forcing my car towards the shoulder... AND dousing the car with a torrent of water that i couldnt see thru for a second or 2...

i guess the majority of those are not virginians tho... but at those fines, it wont take as high a volume...
