Hi,

My family and I were just issued immigrant visas to travel to U.S. This was at the embassy in Ankara, Turkey. Our visa category is F31 (family based, married sons/daughters of U.S. Citizen)... I just read that we may have to stay in a secondary country that is not part of the 33 countries on the restricted list (Iran being one of them) for 14 days before traveling to the U.S. Can anyone confirm this? or are we considered to be Green Card holders and only need to have a negative COVID test 3 days prior to travel?

Any help is highly appreciated.

By the way, even though the stamp in our passport says IV Category: F31... is that our Visa Category or is it something else? Looking at lots of info on the State Department's pages and there is no mention of that category at all, in any section regarding the restriction or no restriction for travel....

Thanks again for all the help

Not sure about travel restrictions relative to an IV visa.  As to visa class/symbol, this link seems helpful.

Good Luck!

Until you enter the US with your F3 visas, you are not green card holders.  But, as immigrant visa holders, you are exempt from the requirement to stay in a non-restricted country prior to your US travel.  Refer to "COVID-19 Travel Restrictions and Exceptions" -- https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/visa-information-resources/covid-19-travel-restrictions-and-exceptions.html

The Proclamations do not apply to: [...]

  • certain travelers whose entry would be in the national interest, as determined by the Secretary of State, the Secretary of Homeland Security, or their designees.

[...]  These three categories of travelers are automatically considered for National Interest Exception (NIE) at the Port of Entry and do not require advance approval of a NIE from an embassy or consulate.

  • immigrants of all categories [...]
