Hi Everyone - I'm a newbie, asking for my husband who's waiting for his IL, DQ'd in Feb '21. He's wondering about when people started actively applying for jobs? I am unsure how to search this topic, so I thought I'd ask here first. I've read people getting offers before their interview. Can people start working as soon as they are approved or do you have to wait until you have your SSN?

Pretty sure he need a SSN. I wouldn’t be applying to anything until he has his interview, because there’s no real way to tell when he’s going to be available. I was DQ’d same month as him.

He can start looking whenever, but he can't say he has work authorization until he has activated his visa, which will likely deter a lot of employers. It'll also be complicated getting paid in the period between POE and when he gets his SSN. 

I personally started applying as soon as I moved.

Escalated Case Inquiry Response: August 7th 2019 - case was "delayed" because they had to "perform additional review" 🙄 case now with an officer.

He can work before receiving SSN. If the employer uses E-verify the employer can select "Awaiting Social Security number." https://www.e-verify.gov/faq/my-employee-applied-for-a-social-security-number-ssn-but-has-not-yet-received-it-what-should-i "If a newly hired employee has applied for, but has not yet received his or her SSN (e.g., the employee is a newly arrived immigrant), attach an explanation to the employee’s Form I-9 and set it aside. Then create a case in E-Verify using the employee’s SSN as soon as it is available. If you are unable to create a case by the third business day after the employee’s first day of employment, select Awaiting Social Security number when prompted by E-Verify."
