US to Thailand calling card - best quality

I would like to find a high quality calling card. The one that I use now is not very good. I am calling a cell number in Ubon Ratchathani and sometimes the sound is so bad I have to call back. Sometimes I get the all circuits are busy try later message. When Chutima calls me the sound quality is much better so I know that higher quality networks exist. I have vonage and the calls to thailand with vonage are even worse than the calling card and more expensive.

The one I have now I purchased on www.ThaiTel.com. It is called HandyDirect and it says that the network is provided by LSR Telecom, USA.

What calling card do you use?

Are you satisfied with the quality?

Are you satisfied with the cost?

i am in bkk right now but when i get back i can tell you the name of the one i use (0 connect fee and no extraneous deductions) $10 gave me about 25 hours iirc. (no difference between mobile or landline either!)

i think you may be near to my area according to your profile, so maybe if you can get to berkeley there is a market on university called tuk tuk and they have the card i am talking about.

I use nobel.com The card's name is "Hello Thailand". You can try it out and see what you think, but, most of the time 80-90% of the time I have no problems. Oh, the cell phone number, and home number is in Nakorn-Ratchasima.

I have tried many cards. The best one I could find is IDphonecard.com. 4.3 a minute to Thailand and I always get connected, and connections are good; no matter what part of Thailand she is in at the time. Very, very, reliable. Works on cell phones also, the same price. No connection or extra fees. I have been using it for 4 months now and all I do is email them and they email me a complete list of all phone calls I made.

I use callingcards.com. It's 2 cents a minute to call to a cell phone. You can get phone records as well.

I have been using Skype on the computer. I have a bluetooth headset for my cell phone that will also connect to the laptop.

I buy Skype credit and calls to Thailand are $.062/min to a bangkok number and $.116 i think to a cell number anywhere in Thailand.

The connect quality is decent to very good, more dependent on where she is in Thailand than anything else.

I only have a cell phone otherwise, and using it to call international is completely cost prohibitive. I have Cingular/ATT pay as you go, and calls to Thailand on that is something like $1/min.

Anyway, just another option.

I've been thinking about using skype. How about Vonage? I haven't checked the costs there.

skip Skype unless the person you're contacting is also using Skype. If you're calling a cell phone it's 11 cents a minute..Land line bangkok 6 cents.

I've been using peanuts LD for a couple years. For $20 I get about 600 minutes from my home phone (3.2 cents a minute). They keep phone records (though I don't know how far back they keep them). Easy to recharge over the net. Has local and 1-800 access numbers (though the 1-800 costs like 1.5 cents more per minute to use...great for payphones if you need it. Or from your cell phone if you need...but I almost always use the local access number from my home phone). You can add up to 20 numbers you'll be calling FROM so you don't have to enter a pin code assuming you call from those phones. If you call from a different phone than what's on the list you have to enter your pin. http://www.peanuts-ld.com/

What's your experience been with callingcards.com??

I've had a good experience with callingcards.com. To call her cellphone, I am paying 2 cents a minute, with 3 minute billing increments. I e-mail them and ask for phone records and they send them with no problems.

I use Skype, a little bit more than a calling card but I have not had any issues with it at all. I also have Skype setup to where I can call a local number that cross ref's my SO's cell phone in Thailand and am only charged the normal Skype fee. It is pretty convenient when i am not near a PC and call call directly from my cell.

Dial up has really poor latency, could be anywhere from 500 ms to 2000ms. Even if there is enough bandwidth for the voice data, you will have a noticeable delay between the two parties. If both ends have DSL or better and there is nothing in between causing problems with latency (like the taiwan earthquake), then computer to computer voice works pretty well.
