An old editorial, but relevant nonetheless, I thought.

Here is a memo to all the anti-war Protesters out there: If you don't like the United States, then you can just pack up and leave.

Instead of yelling about how evil the U.S. government is or about the possible dangers to those poor, innocent Iraqis, why not support the troops who are risking their lives to ensure your freedoms? In other words, if you don't like it, then get the hell out! I'm sure that Canada would love to have you.

While we're at it, let's just get rid of some other malcontents and troublemakers. To all those people who clogged up the streets in protest of segregation, if you didn't like it, why didn't you just leave? Stand behind your country. Stop your whining and support the U.S. government. Martin Luther King Jr., you can just march your way up to Canada if you hate the United States so much.

Everyone who marches on the sidewalk in front of abortion clinics: Hey, it's legal. If you don't like it, you are welcome to go about your merry way. How dare you complain about a decision made by the Supreme Court of the United States? Off to Canada with you. Is abortion legal in Canada? We might have to find another country for you. Stay tuned.

For all you women who complained when you didn't have the right to vote. How dare you disrespect the United States of America? If you don't like it, you can just get out too. Don't let the door hit you in the rear on the way out. Susan B Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Canada is waiting with open arms. Off you go.

Abe Lincoln, what the heck were you thinking changing hundreds of years of traditions and laws. Slavery is an American tradition. If you had a problem with it, you could have hopped the train to Canada. You just had to be a rabble-rouser instead.

Canada suddenly has an impressive citizenry, not to suggest that they don't already.

Now that I have pissed off half of the people who are reading this, let me get to my point.

This country was founded on, and continues to grow better, because of people who dare to stand up against the status quo.

If every person who had ever disagreed with something that was done by our government packed up and left, this would be a very quiet land, and Canada would be incredibly crowded. If you disagree with someone else's statements, then by all means speak up.

This country is great because nonviolent protest is common, allowed and sometimes even causes changes for the better. However, it does no good if you don't speak logically.

An effective argument must have a point, not just be an insult.

If the best you can say is, "If you don't like it, then leave," my response is we don't need you. Come back when you have something worth listening to.

I don't understand what you mean. The post really doesn't have anything to do with Canada. It's not meant to be an insult to Canadians.

IMHO, it's not very complimetary of Canada. It sounds like some of the loud mouth protestors around here who make statements of the "If the best you can say is, "If you don't like it, then leave," my response is we don't need you. Come back when you have something worth listening to" kind. Why does everyone assume that whiners and complainers are wanted in Canada? This editorial sounds like something from the Vietnam Era (oh god am I gonna be flamed for this??? ) in response to the war protestors who went across the border to Canada to keep from being drafted.

So, just out of curiosity, what was so relevant?

I guess maybe I read it differrently. I thought it was commenting on the assertion that those who do not agree with certain things about the U.S. should leave it. As far as I could tell, one could substitute "Europe" or any country within for "Canada".

I thought it was relevant because I can't even count the number of times I read here on VJ, "Well if you don't like such and such about America, why don't you leave?" or "Why are you bringing a foreign spouse here if you hate it so much?". As if anyone who does not accept the status quo should get the hell out. Where to is really beside the point.

Aye, I see your point. Maybe that should have been posted at the very beginning....that Canada was merely used as a hypotheical place, not necessarily that Canada is the place one SHOULD go if unhappy here. I agree though, if one isn't happy where they are, whether that is USA or wherever, find another place to live. As always...JMHO.

That's not really what the piece is saying, though... at all.

I guess the post reminded me of this "forward" i got from my mother in law ......

" WOULDN'T IT BE GREAT TO TURN ON THE TV AND HEAR ANY U.S. PRESIDENT, DEMOCRAT OR REPUBLICAN,

GIVE THE FOLLOWING SPEECH?

My Fellow Americans: As you all know, the defeat of Iraq regime has been completed.

Since congress does not want to spend any more money on this war, our mission in Iraq is

complete. This morning I gave the order for a complete removal of all American forces from Iraq. This action will be complete within 30 days. It is now time to begin the reckoning.

Before me, I have two lists. One list contains the names of countries which have stood by

our side during the Iraq conflict. This list is short. The United Kingdom, Spain, Bulgaria,

Australia, and Poland are some of the countries listed there.

The other list contains everyone not on the first list. Most of the world's nations are on

that list. My press secretary will be distributing copies of both lists later this evening.

Let me start by saying that effective immediately, foreign aid to those nations on List 2

ceases immediately and indefinitely. The money saved during the first year alone will pretty much pay for the costs of the Iraqi war.

The American people are no longer going to pour money into third world Hellholes and watch

those government leaders grow fat on corruption.

Need help with a famine? Wrestling with an epidemic? Call France.

In the future, together with Congress, I will work to redirect this money toward solving the

vexing social problems we still have at home. On that note, a word to terrorist organizations. Screw with us and we will hunt you down and eliminate you and all your friends from the face of the earth. Thirsting for a gutsy country to terrorize? Try France, or maybe China.

I am ordering the immediate severing of diplomatic relations with France, Germany, and

Russia. Thanks for all your help, comrades. We are retiring from NATO as well. Bon chance, mes amis. I have instructed the Mayor of New York City to begin towing the many UN diplomatic

vehicles located in Manhattan with more than two unpaid parking tickets to sites where those vehicles will be stripped, shredded and crushed I don't care about whatever treaty pertains to this. You creeps have tens of thousands of unpaid tickets. Pay those tickets tomorrow or watch your precious Benzes, Beamers and limos be turned over to some of the finest chop shops in the world. I love New York .A special note to our neighbors. Canada is on List 2. Since we are likely to be seeing a lot more of each other, you folks might want to try NOT hacking us off for a change. Mexico is also on List 2. President Fox and his entire corrupt government really need an attitude adjustment. I will have a couple extra tank and infantry divisions sitting around. Guess where I am going to put em? Yep, border security.

Oh, by the way, the United States is abrogating the NAFTA treaty - starting now. We are tired of the one-way highway. Immediately, we'll be drilling for oil in Alaska - which will take care of this country's oil needs for decades to come. If you're an environmentalist who opposes this

decision, I refer you to List 2 above: pick a country and move there. They care. It is time for

America to focus on its own welfare and its own citizens. Some will accuse us of isolationism. I answer them by saying, "darn tootin." Nearly a century of trying to help folks live a decent life Around the world has only earned us the undying enmity of just about everyone on the planet. It is time to eliminate hunger in America. It is time to eliminate homelessness in America. To the nations on List 1, a final thought. Thank you guys. We owe you and we won't forget.

To the nations on List 2, a final thought: You might want to learn to speak Arabic. God bless America. Thank you and good night. "

It's always struck me as a lazy argument - "Don't like it? Leave!" It's a classic false choice, too, as this article points out. Is this phenomenon unusual for these times or has the country always been divided thus? The two party system, it seems to me, would necessitate a black/white, good/bad, yes/no mentality. It would be interesting to know whether anyone argued during the Clinton years, "Hey, don't like living in a country where the president gets a blow-job and tries to cover it up? Move to the Vatican City!"

"It's not the years; it's the mileage." Indiana Jones
