Do immigrants talk to you about their 'status' in the US?

I'm just curious now that you're married/engaged or an immigrant in the U.S....do (other) immigrants talk about their status here?

Ok, so I guess it's just me. I'm an English teacher at a language institute and I noticed that most of my students talk about their status...and how they work (illegally).

It's not all of the students - one country in particular...

I think it's because of my job.

Yes, I do. Mostly people asking for advice, not knowing what they are to do next. I do live about 150 miles from Mexico so that may have something to do with it So I get questions about Mexico and The Philippines. I even helped out a Russian couple back in 04.

Everyone in question was here legally of course.

In my case its people who come on tourist visas and whether or not they remain here legally or not (some have permission to stay as students) - it seems most of them work.

They have no problems talking about their jobs, how they have no SSN, how one woman's husband married an American for a GC while still married to her .

[Apparently the U.S. is his 3rd country and since he was married in his 2nd country and still considered single in his home country, he was able to marry legally in the U.S.)

No. Never.

A lot of people here are immigrants, and they never discuss their status, nor how they got here in the first place. None of them seem to have come here through marriage to U.S. citizens, so I'm guessing, they are either professionals, sponsored by employers, or refugees. Most likely, the former.
