Tax returns during citizenship interview (IRS site doesn't have all years)

Hello all,

I'm due to send out my N-400 in a couple of months and I've been gathering my paperwork. I've looked for information about taxes everywhere, including these boards, and it seems like it's better that I bring my tax returns to the interview. Keep in mind I'm applying under the five-year eligibility, as my green card wasn't through marriage.

Whenever I went on the IRS website, it only showed Return Transcripts starting in 2017. How do I get the IRS to send me the one from 2016? If they ask about my taxes, I'm certain they'll ask me to show everything starting from 2016 (the year I became a permanent resident). And has anyone faced this problem before?

You only get current year + 3 years worth of tax transcripts online or via mail but there is an option to request longer duration. I've made it a habit of requesting transcripts every two years just because I can and for my records (have a google calendar notification).

Directly from the horses mouth. https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript-faqs  Also you can take the tax return you submitted for the years you don't can't tax transcript. That could work as well. I took all 5 years of tax transcript as I applied with 5 year rule and wasn't asked to show any but that highly depends on the IO.

Good luck.

Q12. How do I request a transcript for an older tax year when it’s not available online?
Tax return and record of account transcripts are only available for the current tax year and three prior tax years when using Get Transcript Online. Note: There is a “show all +” expand button below the online tax account transcript type that may provide additional tax years you need. Otherwise, you must submit Form 4506-T to request a transcript for a tax year not available.

Tax return and tax account transcripts are also limited to the current and prior three tax years when using Get Transcript by Mail. However, you may be able to get older tax account transcripts by calling our automated phone transcript service at 800-908-9946. Otherwise, you must submit Form 4506-T.

I just printed out one of the other types that was available for longer on the website for the prior years. I was one of the few asked for returns and IO was happy with those.

Thank you so much for your responses. I'll send out a request for the previous year's tax return transcript.
