Hi there 🙂 I am newly in the USA, married to my wife Lauren & just starting to do some work on my Adjustment of status now that I have started to settle in. I am just working on the form..... and already have questions lol.

-Does anyone know what a travel document number is? do we all have one if we came over on a k1? and also,

-where do we find the non immigrant visa number? On my k1 visa I have a "control number", a "Pet #" and a bright red printed number that begins with P5 on it.

I also have this question to anyone whos already submit their Adjustment of status after getting married!  I have uploaded a screen shot for this too.

When I last arrived in the USA was November 18 on my K1 fiancee visa; what do I put in as  "when i last arrived in the united states, I..."

Thanks if you can help ❤

You only need to provide a travel document number if you used an other travel document instead of a passport to enter the country.

Your visa number is the red number on your visa.

You check option 22a, and type something like "K1 Fiancé visa holder".

Hi there

I am just filling out my adjustment of status form and have a few questions.

I came over on a k1 fiancee visa on the 18th november and am now married to my wife, I am waiting on official papers in the mail....

What is my "current immigration status"?

am I a principal applicant or a "derivitive" applicant?

Thanks so much if you can help

sorry i am not sure what you are talking about!

  • I-864 is filled out by the US citizen and is required when submitting I-485.
  • I-944 is filled out by you and asks many questions about household income, US credit report (or lack thereof), etc. This is also required.
  • I-765 is optional, but free to file. It's for employment authorization while you wait for Green card.
  • I-131 is optional, but free to file. If unexpected travel abroad comes up, approved Advance Parole would allow you to travel back to the US.

I just noticed you live in Los Angeles. It's still unclear how USCIS will respond to a recent court decision about Form I-944. On Dec. 2, the 9th Circuit’s decision affirmed the limited N.D. Cal. injunction: https://cdn.ca9.uscourts.gov/datastore/opinions/2020/12/02/19-17213.pdf

10/11/19 N.D. Cal. https://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/USCIS/Laws/Memoranda/2019/NDCA_Injunction.pdf "are hereby enjoined from applying the Rule, in any manner, to any person residing (now or at any time following the issuance of this order) in San Francisco City or County, Santa Clara County, California, Oregon, the District of Columbia, Maine, or Pennsylvania, or to anyone who is part of a household (as defined by the Rule, 8 C.F.R. § 212.21(d)) that includes such a person."

hey do you know why the website says it costs $410 to file the i-765 employment authorisation form. are k1 applicants exempt from this are they???  https://www.uscis.gov/i-765

It's free if you pay full fee for I-485: https://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/document/forms/i-485instr-pc.pdf "If you properly file Form I-485 and pay the required fees, you may file Form I-765 and Form I-131 without paying additional fees. You may file these forms together, or if you choose to file Form I-765 or Form I-131 separately, you must also submit a copy of your I-797C, Notice of Action, receipt as evidence that you filed and paid for Form I-485."

does that mean my status is still K1 fiance?

Yes, your immigration status is still "K-1 fiance" until I-94 expires.

While I-485 is pending you won't have status but you'll be in a period of stay authorized by the Secretary of Homeland Security.
