Hello,

We had our IR1/CR1 interview scheduled for March 23rd and the medical exam was performed on March 13th. Between those dates, Peru shut all borders, and the embassy canceled our interview. We were finally able to retrieve our sealed medical exam in early June. We don't know when we will be able to have our visa interview nor return to the states.

I found where it says the medical exam is only valid for 6 months (September 13, 2020), but is this for the IR1 visa interview at the Consulate or for Customs and Border Protection upon arrival to the USA after issuance of the IR1 visa?

AKA do we have to be in the states by Sept. 13 2020 or do we have to just have the interview at the Embassy by Sept. 13, 2020?

Thanks for reading!

Visas (after issue) normally expire 6 months after the medical, but sometimes the expiration date is less than 6 months after the medical.  A visa holder must enter the US prior to the visa expiration date.  If a medical exam expires prior to the visa being issued, the consulate will require another one to be completed prior to issuing the visa.

In other words, the visa holder must enter the US within 6 months (max) after the medical exam...as reflected by the expiration date on the visa.

In your example, the latest date for the visa holder to enter the US would be September 2020.......or earlier (as determined by the consulate).

In my wife's case, the visa expiration date was only 5 months after the medical.

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

Yikes.

Peru better get their junk together and Open the country. We really don’t want to have to pay another $500 and lose a day in horrible hospital processes.

Yep.......I expect to soon starting hearing of people who have had visas issued, but they couldn't travel before their visas expired (due to the virus), too.  In that case, the consulate can, at their discretion, re-issue visas....but that would also require a new medical........hopefully, you can soon schedule the interview, receive the visa, and get inside the US prior to September. .....

Sure. Go to my profile and follow me. I’ve done the same for you.

I badger the embassy constantly. They probably hate me. I have asked for emergency interview for the sake of my infant daughter and weekly I send them reminders.

My latest strategy is to ask my US Senator for help. We will see.

Hi!

I’ve checked Colombia’s embassy twitter and they did some kind of Questions&Answers live. So, it seems that if our medical is over 6 months, we will have to do another one before the new interview. Now, It seems that international flights will start operating between September and October according to the “communications And transportation Minister“.

Also, our congresswoman talked to the US embassy consul and he has flagged our case as a priority according to the letter he sent her. We are crossing fingers 😞 as our entire case expires in November.

That was the Ex Minister who was just fired. He said 5 different months on 5 different occasions for opening international flights and this quote was specific to flights from Cusco airport.

All the hope is on International flights opening some time in August.
