Hi,

Will all selectees be able to see they've been selected, or does one have to keep on checking? How long should one be checking and how long are unclaimed numbers available for?

There is no such thing as an “unclaimed number”, you either proceed with your selection or you don’t. You will have until 30 September 2021 to complete the process and be issued a diversity visa under DV2021, so in practical terms the very latest you can start proceeding (or “claiming your number” as you might put it) is around June 2021 - but be aware that might be cutting it fine for successful completion (at least by consular processing), to be safe you should at least have the DS260 submitted by April. 
 

The initial selectees are all announced at the same time. Very rarely there has been a second draw in October-ish (this is never announced, only found out when individuals are contacted by KCC to check entrant status check page again) if it looks like the response rate is low. But the bottom line is if your number is not selected on 6 June you are pretty much out.
 

Of course the systems are impossible the first couple of days (with 20 million or so entrants all trying to log on) so you may not find out exactly on 6 June if you have been selected or not...
