J2 Visa - Covid-19 Furloughed, filing for Unemployment Insurance

Hi,

 

I entered the US July 2019, I finally got a full time job, End of Feb 2020, in the state of Rhode Island.

 

I have been furloughed due to Covid-19.

 

Am I allowed to file for unemployment?

 

I carry my own EAD and SSN, but I do not have a state ID/driving license.

My understanding is you should be fine to apply as your EAD allows you to work anywhere, and therefore are available for work.

Whether or not you will qualify, and for how much, depends on the state's UC program.

The CARES act may have provisions that help as well, which may or may not be updated on the state's UC website (it was passed less than a week ago).

I will not be filing for unemployment.

 

Leaving this here for others to reference.

Who said that? Unemployment is not a public charge under any situation...it's an insurance program that you pay into and earn benefits from.

I would think the bigger issue would be the short amount of time paying into the system at a job that lasted only weeks.

Agreed. The immigration status here is not the issue...it's general UC eligibility that even USCs would be subject to.
