Please, I need some help. My husband received his Green Card in October, 2019. We have been working on building a house in Ghana and after he got his card he returned there to work on the house in November. It will be six months since he left in a short while and he is afraid to return from Ghana now. He does not have a job there, only to work on the house. He has always planned to return here, but we did not file any special paperwork before he left. I am his only family in America. Our house is in my name and he does not have a job here. All he has here is his own checking account and a credit card account. Should we be sure he returns before the six month deadline? How critical is that?

6 mos is a guideline but not a hard and fast rule.

YMMV

I think special circumstances will  e considered. If I remember well, it may only delay his obtaining of his citizenship if he spends a full year out of the United States.

All circumstances will be considered. A single trip of 6-12 months abroad is unlikely to raise a concern.

A single trip over 12 months abroad has a mandatory presumption of abandoning residence that has to be overcome.
